Announcing Bionic Commando Rearmed

January 17th, 2008 Seth Killian

Contrary to some early reports, this game is not the original Bionic Commando, but is (as they call it below) a “makeover” of the original. This means you get the awesome mechanics and gameplay you know and love, but with a bunch of new weapons, fresh graphics, cool boss fights, etc. Read the full press release below (it actually contains some details worth hearing), and head over to IGN.com for screens and a video that will answer all your questions.

Interview with Lead Designer and Producer on Harvey Birdman

January 17th, 2008 Seth Killian

Impressario Paul Semel chats with the men behind Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Kevin Sheller (Producer) and Micah Skaritka (Design Lead).

HOW INVOLVED IN THE GAME WERE THE WRITERS AND PRODUCERS OF ?HARVEY BIRDMAN??

MICAH: Incredibly. The writers were involved in the back and forth of scripts during the whole process. They even led the voice over sessions with the super talented ?Harvey Birdman? actors.

Random Stuff lying around the office — part 2!

January 16th, 2008 Seth Killian

On the heels of our last batch of randomness, here’s some more stuff cluttering the place up that I thought people might get kick out of:

A “threadless”-style Bionic Commando tee that features our hero doing what he loves best–leaping from a tall building. Probably he’s about to dramatically grapple his way to somewhere awesome (or perhaps the disappointments of his post-apocalyptic lifestyle have finally caught up with him and these are his last moments).

Totally sweet Saturday Night Slammasters water bottle. It may have been bad 90s music addling my brain, but I thought Slammasters was really fun. Later in life I had a chance to play against the guys that won the US national Slammasters championships (yes, Capcom had a national tournament for Slammasters, for no readily apparent reason). They squished me like a bug, but I can still enjoy this water bottle.

Capcom Fighting Jam fan. The Japanese text and the fact that the western market doesn’t seem as into fanning themselves generally (it’s called air-conditioning technology, and the rest of the world should look into it) suggests this was a Capcom Japan promo item only.

My trusty Capcom mug. Usually filled with our special blend of grade-D Capcom Coffee, the mug today contains Harvey Birdman, who has his own, tinier coffee mug.

And, to end on a substantially more baffling note, we have a what appears to be a Mega Man radio. When the promo product’s initial design was deemed “awesome, but not awesome enough” by our exacting Marketing department, the developer went back to the drawing board and produced exactly the same item, only this time with suction-cup feet. And the rest, my friends, is history.

Awesome flash demo for Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney

January 15th, 2008 Seth Killian

Using the magic of flash, the wizards at Capcom have brought you this amazing “Mock Trial” demo. Yes, the demo is so cool that it actually gets its own name. What does the demo do? It offers you a feature-complete recreation of the first part of case one in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. Yes, you’re playing the real game.

Better still, using the embed code found HERE, you can slap the demo on to any webpage yourself. Just c+p the code and you’re good. Show your Ace Attorney colors and let your friends and enemies experience the courtroom hijinx as Apollo Justice uses his chords of steel and learns his legal chops.

Terrifying head selects Harvey Birdman pre-order contest winner

January 15th, 2008 Seth Killian

So it’s come time to pick the winners for our Harvey Birdman preorder contest. We called in Capcom’s crack team of statistical scienticians to print out the list of the many entrants, laser-slice them into equally-sized slips, and dump them into the Capcom equivalent of a fishbowl.

After a thorough stirring, the terrifying Mega Man head (with the assistance of Chris’s hand) chose Grand Prize winner Michael Abbott, who will receive bountiful amounts of Harvey Birdman swag

The Grand Prize includes: Volumes 1 through 3 of the Adult Swim animated series, 4 Harvey Birdman character bobble heads and 4 qualities metal posters depicting popular episodes including The “Dabba Don” and “Shaggy Busted,” in addition to the fine game he has already preordered. Congratulations to all the winners.

Zack & Wiki, Most Dynamic Duo Since Batman & Robin

January 15th, 2008 Chris Tou

It’s official. Both the GameSpot reviewers and its readers has confirmed what we knew all along: Zack & Wiki, despite their cutish looks and child-like charm, is more than a match for the formerly most powerful duo of them all, Batman and Robin. They went on the hunt for some bearded dude’s treasure, and came back with GameSpot’s Best Adventure Game of 2007 Award instead.

Not only that, but they are currently running away with the Readers’ Choice votes as well, receiving twice the votes of their next closest competitor and a few presidential candidates.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2G Delayed In Japan, DS Gets A Reprieve (For Now)

January 15th, 2008 Chris Tou

Except for some die hard fans here in the West, you may not know that Monster Hunter is actually a huge franchise. In fact, in a Nintendo DS dominated Japan, the release of a Monster Hunter title is one of the few times the PSP is able to dethrone the DS.

Well, Nintendo can breath easy a little while longer, as Monster Hunter Freedom 2G, set to be released as part of a special bundle with a unique Monster Hunter PSP system in Japan, is now slightly delayed until March 27, 2008, from its original date of March 13th, which is now too late for my birthday.

Street Fighter Stupidity Exhibition Vol 2: Headbite Harder!

January 15th, 2008 Seth Killian

On the heels of Part 1, Unity forum member The Switcher is back with more proof that he has been spending way, way too much time with the excitingly bad Street Fighter cartoon.

This round’s lowlights include: Bison’s homemade electric car, Akuma showing off a new bubble-gum based special move, the phrase “roast rump of Bison,” T. Hawk attacking a defenseless computer monitor, Honda doing the Vulcan Mind-Meld with an electrified pylon, Zangief attacking with a hamburger, Blanka bowling, Honda hacking a computer, and an amazing montage of “Noooooo.”  Thanks to Jinrai for his vigilant youtube patrols.

Kobayashi-san on signing the DMC4 Collector’s Edition boxes

January 14th, 2008 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

DMC4 CE signed by Kobayashi-san

Kobayashi-san spent a few days signing 200 of the cool DMC4 CE tin boxes. These tin boxes will then have the slipcover placed over them, making it virtually impossible to see his signature. During his forced labor, he snapped a few pics with his cell phone and sent us his thoughts:”During New Year’s vacation, I signed 200 copies of the US collector’s edition package.

On the back of the box, over Dante, I signed in Roman-ji, HIROYUKI KOBAYASHI.

There are lots of them in these cardboard boxes!Producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi ”

Thinking Of You… (aka Announcing the signed DMC4 Collector’s Edition “Golden Ticket”)

January 14th, 2008 Nique Fajors

In spite of what the typical gamer believes about our industry, most of our conversations at Capcom center around exceeding gamers high expectations and not simply about maximizing the dollars we can extract from you. Satisfied customers that feel respected and valued will reward the best companies over time. It happens in every other industry and in the end the shakeout in our industry will center around customer satisfaction and value.

DMC4 Collector's Edition packagingOne of the fun topics that I have personally spent a bunch of time on is Devil May Cry 4 Collector’s Edition. For me, one of the behaviors that screams “gamer robbery” is cheap Collector’s Editions that contain little-to-no real value. A 16-cent figurine made by manacled inmates in a Siberian high security prison is not worth an additional $10 in retail costs. For Devil May Cry 4, we were not going to make a Collector’s Edition unless we included assets that had measurable marketplace value. After many months, we decided the lead item would be Volume One of the Devil May Cry Anime (two hours of video programming). As a standalone product it will retail for more than $26 at launch, so the value is measurable. By purchasing our bundle you get it for approximately $10 cheaper than if you bought them separately. Once we established the anime disc as the foundation of the Collector’s Edition we then added the regular stuff (e.g., making of video with Game Producer, digital art book, and music soundtrack).

DMC CE tin box back (Dante) and front (Nero)When we announced the Devil May Cry 4 Collector’s Edition I really thought that the fans would be thrilled about the Anime bundle, but the response was mixed. Many of you talked about seeing an episode of the Japanese version on youtube and so what was the point of buying all four volumes with the Collector’s Edition. We respectfully disagree, but we listened, so we decided to add another unique item.

Kobayashi-san signed CE boxesFor what I believe is truly a first in our industry, DMC4 producer Kobayashi-san (also producer of Resident Evil 4, nuff said) has personally signed 100 copies of the PS3 and Xbox 360 Collector’s Edition tin by hand. We are now going to reintegrate these signed tins into the game manufacturing line and randomly distribute them across the US to a number of retailers and distributors. It might not be the keys to the candy factory, but it will be a rewarding, personal touch for a few lucky DMC fans.

Image from the DMC animeFor you hardcore Devil May Cry fans I recommend the following course of action. Pull out Devil May Cry 3 and play some of your favorite levels a couple days before Devil May Cry 4 is available and once you receive your game watch the entire Volume One of the Anime, and then begin to play Devil May Cry 4. That for me is a high value entertainment experience (white wig not included).

If you are lucky enough to get a signed game box from Kobayashi-san congratulations and thanks for helping to keep us honest.
