Capcom’s European Staff Briefly Exposed to Sunshine, Fresh Air

March 31st, 2008 Seth Killian

With the recent announcement of Capcom and MotoGP’s glorious 5-year partnership, it was safe to assume the deadbeats from Capcom Europe would be at the big MotoGP event in Jerez Spain, cluttering up a perfectly good motorcycle race with videogames. Pictured above is Capcom Europe’s Michael Pattison trying unsuccessfully to get an autograph from Dorna Sports (they own MotoGP) CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta.

Check out the flickr pool (thanks Ben!) for bikes, babes, and shot-cluttering bald heads, and pick up MotoGP 2007 here.

Count the game references - Mauvais Rôle

February 20th, 2008 Colin

Every now and then, student animation projects are just downright amazing.  This one is from a French animation project.  Called Mauvais Rôle, or Bad Role, it follows a fantasy RPG demon as he looks for a new job.  Just try and count the video game references, there are a ton!  If you pay attention, you can even see Mega Man.  Enjoy and remember: subtitles improve reading skills!

Cool zombie contest for UK release of Resident Evil: Extinction DVD

February 11th, 2008 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

Definitely NOT a zombie…Over on the island nation of Great Britain, or England, or the UK — whatever it is these days, the Sony Pictures folks are running a pretty cool online RE DVD promotional campaign. Head over here to the official RE: Extinction site, upload a picture of yourself (if you so desire), adjust your tone, darkness and, best of all, your decomposition levels to zombify your bad self. You need to feed and exercise your zombie slave to make it a more efficient brain-chomper, for on Feb 18, all zombies will be “released” across a number of UK websites in homepage ads to battle it out with Alice.

Mila’s virtual character will be wondering from site to site on the 18th, slaughtering zombies like some sorta superhot zombie shredder. If your zombie survives, you might win some cool schwag, including PS3s, a Sony Bravia or copies of the movie. Of course, you’ll prolly need to be a resident of the UK in order to win (I should be able to tell you, but I lied when I clicked the “I have read and agreed to the rules of the contest” button), but there’s nothing stopping you from making a zombie doppleganger in the meantime. My zombie is named “Kramez,” go figure.

Bionic Commando podcast rides again, Rearmed-style

January 23rd, 2008 Seth Killian

In this installment, Ben Judd speaks with the dashing Simon Viklund (pictured above, shamelessly attempting to curry the favor of Inafune-san by wearing a Mega Man shirt), director of the much-anticipated Bionic Commando Rearmed.

Simon Viklund, the Director of Bionic Commando Rearmed, joins the podcast today to tell us all about this fantastic return to side-scrolling action. Everything you want to know about Rearmed is right here. The multi-talented Simon also makes all of us feel worthless in comparison, as he discusses the music in Bionic Commando, where he is the Sound Director.

The new podcast is here! Be sure also to check out the BC team’s Bionic Commando developer blogs, which give you some great behind-the-scenes stuff from multiple perspectives including Capcom Japan and Capcom Europe, as well as Swedish developer Grin’s take on things.

Street Fighter IV Unwrapped: Interview with Producer Yoshinori Ono

January 8th, 2008 Seth Killian

Next-gen digs deep with SFIV producer Ono-san in a new four-page interview. They talk about everything from art style, to Ono-san’s dedication to the series’ history, inspiration and pressures for the future, and even his thoughts on the differences between Americans and Europeans. Choice quotes include:

“You begin by looking at the foundations of the series, to try and create something inspired by the feel, the gameplay, the atmosphere and everything about that game,” insists Ono. Isn’t that a little dangerous? “Yes! I’m not aiming to create a game that will be better than SFII, but I suppose I am aiming to follow in its footsteps. SFII is like a bible – every time I play it, it inspires me to strive and try harder.”

“You Europeans are more reserved than Americans,” says Ono, before laughing. “Then again, Americans are quite vulgar!”

The article also calls out Sirlin’s articles about balancing Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. If you missed them, check out the most recent one here, which contains links to the earlier articles as well–essential reading for any fans of the series!

Nothing says “swing-arm action” like a Volvo

December 5th, 2007 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

Bionic Commando Volvo C30Because I am an American, I pretty much don’t bother with attempts to grok any other languages out there (exception: the slight smattering of Japanese I have picked up over the years, domo arigato very much). Why bother wracking my fat-saturated, TV-blasted thinkbox with different words when it’s much easier to just squish back into my overstuffed easy chair and wait for the rest of the world to learn our lingo by forced exposure to Bruce Willis movies, McDonalds menus and Windows? Ha ha, eat it, global cultures!

That being said, I often rely upon the internet tubes to provide me with make-good-wordings for the occasional barbaric tongue I’m forced to gaze at through the light glaze of Krispy Kreme ooze that can usually be found smeared across my face from hairline to triple chins. The downside is that Swedish does not appear to be one of those wacky languages that Bablefish handles, forcing me to Google my way through the wilds of the internets back alleys. Scary!

As a result, this posting on Swedish website/magazine/TV show Game Reactor, which links to some frickin’ sweet photos of a Bionic Commando-wrapped Volvo C30, remains largely mysterious. InterTran at TranExp.com (itself a worryingly-URLed website) can only tell me this much:

“Japp. Swede spelhuset Grinning ( as currently am working with Cinema Commando ) had together with the servile Volvo - lover Gunnar joke the Mobile kirrat a elbow grease pimpad Volvo for that slip about in wonder winter. Here is pictures they precise mailade ourselves.”

As much as I am interested in finding out how much elbow grease has been pimped by Gunnar the Volvo-lover (and I’m pretty sure that’s illegal, even in Sweden) , InterTrans really isn’t helping us much here. Go here to check out some more pics while we check in with the boys in Sweden to find just what the heck is really happening here. Is this part of some vast Swedish automotive/game design conspiracy? Does Gunnar really love Volvos and how often? Or did Ben Judd just need new wheels? Stay tuned!

Bionic Commando podcast with Director Ulf Andersson

November 28th, 2007 Seth Killian

Bionic Commando producer and man-about-town Ben Judd is back on the mic.

This week’s guest is Director Ulf Andersson, joining the team live from the home of Swedish developers GRIN, discussing story changes, character design and if we’ll see colors in the final game! Ben Judd and the team also respond to your questions.

Careful, you might be eaten by a Grue. Or a Poogie.

November 16th, 2007 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

Cryptozoology!

So, our compatriots across the Pong Pond at Capcom UK sponsored a Fortean expedition to the (I would suppose) murky rainforests of Guyana in search of giant anacondas and the mysterious didi, which supposedly “rip the tongues from living cattle.” Although it seems like it would be difficult for me to type anything more rad than that onto our corporate blog today, this expedition was sponsored in the name of marketing Monster Hunter in Europe. I will wait a moment while your mind boggles. G’head, collect yourself.

Now that I have dropped this mindbomb on you, head over to the official Center for Fortean Zoology’s Guyana Expedition 2007 blog to track the team’s progress in search of critters not normally seen outside the pages of the Monster Manual. Like, now. For the love of everything cool, add the subscription feed to your reader while you’re at it. So far, no sign of tongue-chomping forest apes, J-Lo crushing reptiles, lost tribes of Bigfeets or Cthulu, but who knows what the future may hold. Well, Cthulu knows what the future holds, but then again, he’s a telepathic sticky green spawn of the stars with an awful squid-head with writhing feelers who brings the End of All Things. So, there’s that.

For the benefit of our American readers, “the Pond” is that large body of water east of New York, aka “the Atlantic,” while Guyana is a country in South America, located south of America, and is not, as it might sound, an ingredient in Red Bull.
