2007 1UP Awards

December 19th, 2007 Chris Tou

For most, the end of the year usually is a time for too much eggnog, finally getting to touch a member of the opposite sex thanks to the magical Mistletoe, and making resolutions that you know you will never keep. However, the end of the year also signals the time for the reason you couldn’t keep those resolutions, videos games, to be given the proper recognition they deserve. 1up.com is getting the ball rolling, and among its nominees were several of our very own Capcom titles. The Best Adventure Game category looks really tough, especially as we’re competing with ourselves with 3 games our own games.

December 7th, 2007 Chris Tou

Gamers Will Have the Opportunity to Experience the Power of the “Devil Bringer” Before Purchasing the Game

Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today confirmed that owners of Sony Computer Entertainment’s PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft will be able to experience Devil May Cry® 4 early, thanks to the release of a playable demo. A free downloadable demo of the game will be available on the PLAYSTATION®Store and Xbox LIVE® Marketplace in early 2008. Devil May Cry 4 has been rated M for Mature by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB).

The demo introduces gamers to the gothic-inspired supernatural world of Devil May Cry 4, new protagonist Nero and the awesome power of his Devil Bringer. The demo consists of a sampling of sections from the full game, chosen to showcase Devil May Cry 4’s varied locales and allows gamers to familiarize themselves with Nero’s unique abilities. Players will receive instruction on the various new actions that the Devil Bringer bestows, such as the ability to slam creatures to the ground, cover great distances in a single bound or even grab enemies while on the ground or in the air and pull them towards Nero to continue the attack combo. The Exceed system allows Nero to “rev up” his sword as if it were a motorcycle throttle and unleash devastating attacks. Players will need to master all these techniques before the end of demo showdown with the mighty Berial.

Fully demonstrating the power of the next generation of consoles, the Devil May Cry 4 demo brings to life the coastal city of Fortuna and its surroundings, such as the port and snow-capped mountain ranges in exquisite detail. Devil May Cry 4 delivers its intense action at a constant 60 frames per second at 720P resolution on HD monitors, ensuring seamless and breathtaking gameplay all in stunning high definition.

Kotaku Feature On Ben Judd, Bionic Commando Producer

November 27th, 2007 Chris Tou

Kotaku editor Brian Ashcraft does his thing from across the big pond over in Japan. In fact, he does it from the city of Osaka, which just happens to be where Castle Capcom is located. This makes Ben Judd, who is in Japan, producing games, a mere stone’s throw away and naturally a great interview candidate, and so Kotaku did exactly that.

Brian has just posted on Kotaku said exclusive interview where Ben discloses more about how he got started in the industry and ended up at the console game development mecca known as Japan, how Bionic Commando went from a possible 2D portable title to a next-gen AAA experience, working with both Japanese and Swedish developers at the same time, and having hot dogs hanging off your arm…

After graduation, he got a job at an import video game shop and kept studying Japanese full speed. He measured his progress by his ability to understand Final Fantasy games in their native lingo. “When I got Final Fantasy VII and Cloud showed up in a bath with other men,” Judd remember, “I had no clue what was going on.” By the time he got to FFIX, he could completely understand 98 percent of the game in Japanese. But Judd knew that if he was ever going to use his language skills, he need to get it damn close to perfect - as perfect as it was going to be for a non-native speaker. Making the trip out to Japan again, he got a job teaching English. His free time was spent honing his language skills. “Then about that time, there was a death in the family,” Judd says. “Here I was whiling away my time in Japan. I needed to get back to States.” Capcom USA had a job opening, and Judd applied. Translation tests, interview-after-interview and teleconferences in Tokyo followed. Judd was hired. And after a stint working in the American office, he was back in Japan.

Check out the whole feature on Kotaku.

MotoGP Fans, Tell Us What Should Be in GP 08!

November 8th, 2007 Kraig Kujawa
Hey MotoGP Fans — From reading the MotoGP forums and other various posts on the Internets, it’s pretty obvious that you guys have some of the most discriminating tastes when it comes to games — it seems like you treat ‘em like fine wine. So who better to ask about what should be in the next MotoGP ‘08 than all of you?As Sven mentioned on the GP boards earlier, the current PS 2 edition was created with a shorter development cycle that we would have liked. The next one will be a full-on next-gen extravaganza deluxe full of bells, whistles, and all that stuff. We and the Milestone team have tons of ideas of what to put into the game, so now’s your turn. In the comments section below, tell us what you’d like to see and what you thought about Moto GP 07 PS 2. We’re listening.

(But this is my first post, so please, be gentle.)

Hiroyuki Kobayashi Interview On ActionTrip

October 4th, 2007 Chris Tou

Those action fanatics over at ActionTrip recently tracked Devil May Cry 4 producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi and managed to squeezed some DMC4 information out of him, such as the development of DMC4 on the PS3, the effect of Nero being the main character (As opposed to Dante), what’s new with DMC in this 4th iteration, and making DMC more accessable to everyone.

ActionTrip: The Devil May Cry series has always retained a great number of devotees. Are there any particular aspects of the game fans have complained about earlier, which you are looking to improve upon in DMC 4?Hiroyuki Kobayashi: There were a lot of fans who felt that the Devil May Cry 3 controls were very difficult. Giving consideration to that, we have tried to give new users as well as older fans an easier starting point from which to get into the game. There are some tutorial elements at the beginning that help players learn the basic controls, and the difficulty ramps up at a bit of a slower pace. I’m not saying the game will be simple, as there will be plenty of difficult gameplay for veterans of the series. These games have always been noted for their challenge, and that will continue. However, this game will certainly be easier for anyone to pick up than Devil May Cry 3 was, and should also provide satisfaction for veterans, especially in the later stages of the game where some significant challenges await.
