Wii Fanboy Interviews Didier Malenfant, Cofounder of Ready At Dawn

April 11th, 2008 Chris Tou

Recently, right on our very own forums, fans repeatedly expressed some displeasure at the caliber of third party games coming out on the Nintendo Wii. One of the many points often heard is that the Wii is often on the receiving end of many ports, particular PS2 ports. However, one exception to this complaint has been the upcoming Okami for the Wii. As Wii Fanboy puts it, Okami is “the perfect example of how porting games can be a force for good”.

To that end, they interviewed Didier Malenfant, president and co-founder of Ready At Dawn, the folks responsible for the awesome port of Okami. They asked him to dish on such things as his side of the “how Okami came to be” story, why you should play the Wii version of Okami even if you have played the PS2 version previously, and how they dealt with the pressure of porting an award winning and critically acclaimed game.

What helped the most was the fact that we were all huge fans of the game ourselves to begin with. You don’t take a game as beautiful as Okami and think that you can mess with it, try to add content that doesn’t belong there or something. We have so much respect for the original game that we decided from the get-go that this was going to be a labor of love. The goal was to reproduce the experience as closely as possible. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it basically.

Check Wii Fanboy to read the entire interview.

Okamiart.com - A Gift to all Okami Fans

April 2nd, 2008 Colin

Okamiart.com

Sometimes my job is really fun, as is the case today.  In working towards the release of Okami, we have been providing our partners with some amazing pieces of Okami art in order to put together beautiful articles about the game.  Just take a look at the latest EGM or Play (with POSTER!) to see what I’m talking about.  In fact, we’ve given them so much art, they’ve never used it all.  Ten DVDs full of art go a long way, let me tell you.

To celebrate the launch of Okami on the Wii, we wanted to find a special way to thank all the vocal Okami fans that encouraged us to take a second shot at success with this title.  We looked at special tiny art books for preorder, but the format didn’t do the art justice and we wanted to reward the fans of the PS2 version as well.

So, without further adu, I’d like to present http://www.okamiart.com.  This is a collection of almost every piece of Okami art we’ve made, set up in beautiful gallery form for your downloadable pleasure.  Working with our friends at Udon, there’ s also a beatiful large art book you can order from the site.

Featuring original art, character art, backgrounds, desktop downloads, chat icons, and even a user fan art section, http://www.okamiart.com is everything you ever wanted to see of our favorite goddess turned wolf.

Also, in the coming weeks, we’ll be having some fan art competitions both on http://www.okamiart.com and our friends over at DeviantArt.com.  With some amazing prizes, you should get drawing today and submit them to our expert panel of judges for both internet fame and some exclusive Okami items.

Thank you again for all your support and remember to buy Okami for the Wii on April 15th!

“5 Reasons You Suck if you Don’t Play Okami”

March 27th, 2008 Seth Killian

Cheerleading and gentle cajoling doesn’t seem to have worked, so now the world’s enamored press has turned to open abuse of you, the “not-buying-Okami-for-some-impossibly-dumb-reason” public! As author Tyler Nagata explains, “This isn’t tough love, it’s a friggin’ INTERVENTION. Don’t miss this game.”

Actually, while it sounds like this GamesRadar piece is yelling at you with their “5 Reasons You Suck if you Don’t Play Okami,” they actually just end up sort of swooning about the many awesome things about Okami, ending on this important note:

The best reason why you should pick up Okami is that games like Okami can’t exist without you. If we don’t support games that break away from the beaten path and succeed, we’ll have nothing but more sequels and recycled games based on past financial successes. Yes, we want to play Gears of War 2, StarCraft II and GTA IV. But without surprises like Okami to mix things up every once in a while, the world of gaming will become as predicable and dull as the next Dynasty Warriors.

Another Second Time Around: IGN’s take on Okami for the Wii

March 24th, 2008 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

Okami’s Second Chance on IGNYes, the title of this post is a reference to a Goo Goo Dolls song, back from when they used to be good (like, almost Replacements good. Almost) and before they became your mom’s favorite band. Ha! Your mom likes the Goo Goo Dolls!

Focus, Kramer, focus! IGN talks with everybody’s favorite forum lurker (and Capcom VP) Christian Svensson, who talks about Okami’s long hard road out of development hell. It’s a lengthy piece (like Sven’s forum posts, Zing!), but an interesting read. Get at it already!

Golden like the wolf: Okami officially blessed by Nintendo for April 15 Wii release

March 21st, 2008 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

Okami wallpaperEvery day, I walk by Kubozono-san’s cubicle, and every day, I find myself stopping to watch him play Okami on the Wii for a few minutes. And every day, I think to myself, “Man, I’m going to play this game over again!” 480p Okami, 16×9 widescreen, plus Wii wiggle-waggle controls? A thing of beauty, really, and absolutely the way this game was meant to be played. Just as Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition impressed the pants offa everyone who played (for the third time through, for some folks), I think that Okami is really going to knock socks off all comers. Nintendo of America has just officially approved Okami, so we’ll be shipping it out to stores in North America soon in order to hit the April 15 release date. Now you know where your tax return/”economic stimulus package” dollars are going to go!
