30 Rock writer thinks Okami can teach your kids

April 16th, 2008 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

Okami on What They Play.comThank the omnipotent Flying Spaghetti Monster that the writer’s strike idiocy is now behind us; I can quit reading and becoming a better person and go back to slowly morphing into a pile of goo in front of my ginormous TV. One of my favorite things to watch is 30 Rock, Tina Fey’s awesome assault on America’s funnybones. Breaks my heart that a quality show like 30 Rock is somewhere in the 100’s in terms of people watching while 80% of America tunes in for crap reality and Jim Belushi “comedy” programmes. Sigh.

Dave Finkel is a writer on 30 Rock (got an Emmy for his work, in fact!) and also contributes to family-friendly gaming site What They Play. He’s got a lot of very nice things to say about Okami, including asserting that the game could actually (shock! gasp!) teach your kids something!!1

But here’s where Okami sets itself apart from the rest: it’s all based on actual Japanese mythos. The story telling is so vivid and fascinating, I found myself doing more research so that I could share these stories with my kid. There’s a soul at play here, and it is deeply resonant.

Read on for the rest of his very interesting take on Okami.

RE in CG on DVD, OK? LOL!

December 17th, 2007 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

Sony Pictures and Capcom are working on an all-CG RE feature, called Resident Evil: Degeneration, which should come as no surprise to those of you paying attention. If you’ve picked up Resident Evil: Extinction, you may have seen this super-brief teaser trailer from the upcoming feature. If you haven’t picked up the movie yet, consider this reason number 2 (after Milla in a red dress and guns) to own the film. The trailer shows us that the new CG flick will be set seven years after Raccoon City was nuked (caution, spoilers behind), and will feature everybody’s favorite leather-jacketed member of STARS, Leon Kennedy. Plus: zombies! And cops ! Cross your fingers we get zombie cops. Resident Evil: Degeneration will be out in 2008.

Devil May Cry 4 Visits Gotham

December 11th, 2007 Lindsay

Sub-zero temperatures and at least a 45-minute wait didn’t stop Devil May Cry fans to play Devil May Cry 4 on the PS3 and Xbox 360 at this year’s New York Anime Festival. Yes, actually play DMC4 before it hits stores on February 5th!

Thank you to all of you that came by our booth. And sorry for not letting in all the under-17 year olds to play—I know you understand even though you were hating on us.

P.S.: Ashley—we’ll see you at the next festival, and first in line to play Devil May Cry?

P.P.S.: Mom and Daughter team—we’re still waiting for you to post that video of Mom playing DMC4!

The line to play DMC4 stretches around the corner

Unpuzzleable!

Z-Dub box artThe Zack & Wiki love continues to flow from IGN! Everyone’s favorite flying-magic- monkey-junior-pirate-Wii-puzzle-brain game has just been nominated as the site’s Game of the Month, amazingly beating out Guitar Hero III (a game in heavy rotation around the Capcom offices — who else has developed the GH clawhand from too many late night sessions? Throw up the devil horns with your mangled paw). Check out their high praise indeed here.

Amongst all the ah-shucks inducing praise from the IGN crew comes this line: “Easily one of the most inspired, innovative, and intuitive games on Wii thus far, Capcom’s evolution of the classic point-and-click adventure genre is simply stunning.” Thanks, IGN, for all your kind words about Z-Dub!

Why are these dudes smiling?

Ziff-Davis visits Capcom Shoe and Ryan

What’s up with these dudes? Why are they so obviously enjoying themselves so much in these crappy phonecam shots? And what has prompted a visit to Capcom’s Bay Area office from some of EGM/1up’s most senior folks? Only time will tell…
