Lost Planet COLONIES EDITION thaws on 1up.com

March 12th, 2008 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

Lost Planet COLONIES boxfrontLost Planet COLONIES EDITION was probably the worst kept secret at Capcom in recent memory, right after the secret of me being so awesome (not actually a secret, but a new rumor I’m gingerly trying on, like a pair of tight pants after Thanksgiving). After months of dodging questions with a terse “No comment” like a Spitzer aide at a bikini pageant, we finally blew the lid off COLONIES on Monday at our “Digital Day” media event. The fruits of the Lost Planet team’s labor can be seen first on 1up.com right now and tons o’ other sites tomorrow morning. $29.99!!1

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition PS3 Released To Stores

February 26th, 2008 Chris Tou

“… Lost Planet deserves to be found.” - 8/10 Game Informer

… Los Planet delivers plenty of stunning-looking, innovative gameplay…” - 4 out of 5 Stars, Playstation: The Official Magazine

Today marks the release of Lost Planet PS3 to your favorite local videogame store. Yes, we know it’s a year later than the previous 360 version, but, hey, good things come to those who wait. In addition to the singleplayer campaign, the PS3 version contains, out of the box, 16 multiplayer maps (Including all the multiplayer maps we had previously released on the 360 version) for endless hours of 16-player multiplayer action. Not only that, but you can also play as special playable characters originally released on the PC version, Mega Man (includes a Mega Buster), Joe, Frank West, as well as a PS3 exclusive character, Luka.

Lost Planet PlayStation 3 demo returns; has your name, number

February 14th, 2008 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

Now with players inside…Psst! Don’t look now, but the PlayStation 3 multiplayer demo for Lost Planet: Extreme Condition is now back up on the PlayStation network. Turns out that well over 100,000 people downloaded the demo in less than 24 hours and almost everyone immediately tried to hop into a game. The resulting flood of incoming connection requests made it tough for people to join matches, but Sony has since done some maintenance on the server side that should hopefully have helped smooth out the multi-player experience. It’s believed that the issues have been resolved and players should be able to enjoy Lost Planet in all its online glory.

The demo features the Pirate Fortress map and has both Elimination (aka “deathmatch”) and Team Elimination (aka “team deathmatch”) game modes. The demo is limited to 8 players during matches, but the full version — out February 26! — will support up to 16 players in a single match.

The full version of the game includes an exclusive new unlockable character, Luka, all the added characters from the PC version of the game (Frank West, Joe, and Mega Man), all four game modes, and every Lost Planet map ever made. This definitive Lost Planet: Extreme Condition PS3 package goes on sale at retail starting February 26th.

If you still have the demo downloaded on your PS3, you will not have to download it again (indeed, you’ve probably still been playing since last week, as we have). We’ve been playing a few matches here at the Capcom offices this afternoon and have had no problems connecting to games. We’ve been jumping into matches and handing players their heads on a VS rocket left and right. Our PS3 PSN ID is Chris Tou’s, “fobtastic.” See you on EDN-III! We’ll be the ones aiming the homing laser at your face.

Lost Planet PSN Demo Makes Strategic Retreat, Plots Revenge Upon its Glorious Return

February 8th, 2008 Seth Killian

Ut-oh:

The multiplayer demo for Lost Planet: Extreme Condition is temporarily being removed from the PlayStation Network in order to address issues that have come to light. We will be working overtime to correct the issue and expect to upload a new version to the PlayStation Network as soon as possible that accurately reflects the incredible online features of the game. For those of you who have already downloaded the demo, the servers are being taken down until the new version is ready to go. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and your interest in Lost Planet! Stay tuned.

Surprise! Lost Planet PS3 demo hits PSN Today (Now Live!)

February 7th, 2008 Seth Killian

We’re happy to announce that Lost Planet: Extreme Condition on PlayStation3 will be offering a free multiplayer online demo later TODAY, February 7, 2008. That’s today, as in… today. The demo features the Pirate Fortress and will have both Elimination (aka “deathmatch”) and Team Elimination game modes. For reasons known only to top Capcom scientists, the free demo supports only 8 players, but don’t worry—the full game will still let you revel in the glory of 16 slot multiplayer.

The full PS3 version of the game includes the PS3 exclusive new unlockable character Luka, all the added characters from the PC version of the game (Frank West, Joe, and Mega Man), all four game modes, and every Lost Planet map ever made. This definitive Lost Planet: Extreme Condition PS3 package goes on sale at retail starting February 26th.

Update: It’s now live and available for download in the PSN Store!

Yo, Wayne! Lost Planet superstar signed to GI Joe movie

December 19th, 2007 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

Byun-hung LeeByun-hung Lee, the Korean-born Japanese TV superstar who gave his face to Lost Planet’s Wayne, is extending his reach to US audiences. Not satisfied just playing a mecha-piloting snow pirate, he’s now stepping into the split-toed tabi of Stormshadow in the GI Joe movie! Sure, dangerous guns, crazy vehicles, comical speech impediments and shiny steel masks are cool, but nothing can trump the bad/good ninja dressed in blinding white in the Joe oeuvre. Much like poor crazy Moon Knight, dressing yourself in white is a bold choice for a silent assassin; those types normally favor a more slimming black look. It would be like Jeff Gordon racing with his helmet turned backwards over his face or Tiger playing golf with a Whiffle Ball bat (note: both of these changes would possibly make me interested in either of their respective sports).

Let’s hope all of our treasured, precious 80’s childhood memories are handled as well as Transformers (oil watersports scene aside). Remember kids: Knowing is half the battle! Stay in school! Etc.

Capcom/Intel Lost Planet Focus Test Pictures!

November 7th, 2007 Chris Tou

Recently we sent out a call for Bay Area gamers to come to our offices and participate in Intel’s Lost Planet Focus Test, for which Intel sent us PCs, equipped with their latest quad-core processors. Then we installed Lost Planet on them.

Last Friday, 5 lucky gamers were chosen out of the dozens of entries to come and play Lost Planet on the Intel machines for a few hours, in both single player and multiplayer game modes.

In general, everything went off without a hitch, except for one of participants, who, even after numerous confirmations, still failed to show. That’s okay, the loss is completely his, as all the participants who did show up received a gift in the form of the Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor QX6700, which streets for about $950. Not bad at all, considering all they had to do was play Lost Planet for 3 hours and answer a few questions.

Bet that guy will swim across oceans to show up the next time we have a focus test.

Beyond3D Gets Technical With Lost Planet

October 5th, 2007 Chris Tou

During this year’s CEDEC 2007, two members of the Lost Planet development team, Takami Taki, Technical Manager, and Yasuhide Sawada, a programmer, held a talk about our MT Framework engine, the engine used to power Dead Rising, Lost Planet, and the upcoming Devil May Cry 4. They talked about the engine’s initial roots on the PS2, the challenges of developing for the next-gen systems, and some very technical talk about the features and specs of the engine itself. Beyond3D was there with all the coverage.

Lost Planet, originally titled Third Planet, initially was in development for Sony’s PlayStation2 from April to December 2004. The title, already featuring a setting similar to the end-product released on the Xbox 360, was targeted right from the start at the North American and European console game market. During this stage the 20-man team grew interested in an extensive particle effects system, ranging from snow storms to explosion. However, the project was moved to the Xbox 360 in 2005 due to severe performance limitations on the PS2. The fact that the MT Framework was already in development at that time made it the obvious choice for Lost Planet.
