Monster Hunter Freedom 2G Delayed In Japan, DS Gets A Reprieve (For Now)

January 15th, 2008 Chris Tou

Except for some die hard fans here in the West, you may not know that Monster Hunter is actually a huge franchise. In fact, in a Nintendo DS dominated Japan, the release of a Monster Hunter title is one of the few times the PSP is able to dethrone the DS.

Well, Nintendo can breath easy a little while longer, as Monster Hunter Freedom 2G, set to be released as part of a special bundle with a unique Monster Hunter PSP system in Japan, is now slightly delayed until March 27, 2008, from its original date of March 13th, which is now too late for my birthday.

Capcom at the Jump Festival

December 27th, 2007 Seth Killian

Manga magnates Shonen Jump held their annual Jump Festival at the Makuhari Messe convention center just outside of Tokyo, on December 22nd and 23rd. As far as I can determine, few, if any, were caught actually jumping at the Jump Fest.

The relatively XBOX360-indifferent Japanese waited over 3 hours to play the 360 version of Devil May Cry 4, and the line to play the PS3 version was nearly 4 (count them! four!) hours long. As you can see pictured above, producer Kobayashi-san also took the stage to demonstrate, playing as both Nero and Dante.

The fest also had the first playable version of the new game Rosario + Vampire, which, in a shocking move, Capcom has decided isn’t quite right for release in the Western market. There were also predictably well-attended panels with voice actors and actress from the forthcoming Rosario + Vampire anime series. Attendees were also treated to the first showing of an exclusive trailer for Monster Hunter 2nd G.

Monster Hunter: Frickin’ Huge in Japan

Hunting monsters in Akihabara

If Monster Hunter could be summed up in one Tom Waits song verse, it would be from Big in Japan: “I got the moon, I got the cheese, I got the whole damn nation on its knees, I’m big in Japan, big in Japan.” At this point in time, 1 in 5 Japanese PSP owners have a Monster Hunter UMD in their collection. That’s big — crazy big!

Kotaku has a story about a Monster Hunter PSP fan “meet up” that recently happened on the streets of Akihabara (”Akiba,” to those in the know). In a bit of brilliant Japanes-to-English naming, they called their event Monster Hunter Portable 2nd Street Real Meeting Place. Can you imagine WoW/EQ fans dragging their PCs out into the street to hang out (those would have to be some real long CAT-5 cables)?

I am very disrespectful to dirt!

Babelfish has helpfully translated a portion of this sign as saying: “10 gill cards you aim toward exchange in the hunter and 1 day of first meeting! Dying, you grudge the handling!” I couldn’t have put it any better myself.

Mega Man 20th Anniversary Party!

November 20th, 2007 Seth Killian

The Mega Man 20th Anniversary Party went down this past weekend (Nov 18th) at Sunshine City hall in Ikebukuro Tokyo. The birthday candle blow-out on the main stage brought Inafune-san together with Mega Man artists to celebrate the 20th anniversary, where they all sang “Happy Birthday” to the Blue Bomber.
