January 3rd, 2008 Seth Killian

It’s another fireside chat between the 1UP crew and SFIV producer Ono-san. This time they get down and dirty with discussions behind the mysterious (and soon to be renamed) “saving system” that replaces the parry from Street Fighter III, the Revenge system, game speed, balance, super moves, and how Street Fighter IV can draw in new players while giving the hardcore plenty of options.

If you’ve missed anything else from the heaps of SFIV goodness being released, head over to the 1UP.com hub to get the goods.

Attention, Achievement Whores! Dead Rising Achievement secrets revealed!

December 18th, 2007 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

You know you are

That got your attention faster than news of Avatar’s easy Achievement hack, didn’t it? MTv’s games blog, Multiplayer, has been digging in to the glorious mystery of everyone’s favorite invisible nerd points and just set their sites on Dead Rising. MTv conversed via email with DR game designer Goda Hidehiro about inspirations behind the Achievements, why all the game’s Achievements are the same worth regardless of difficulty and his personal take on why we keep chasing those points which are worth less than your epic WoW mount du jour.

Dead Rising is not only a truly awesome game, but also boasts some of my favorite Achievements, such as points for walking 33 feet on zombie heads (”Zombie Road”), knocking over zombies with an umbrella (”Raining Zombies”) and an Achievement for escorting 8 female survivors simultaneously (”Frank the Pimp”). IMHO, The single most creative Achievement in this or any 360 game is “Zombie Genocider,” which comes from killing 53,594 zombies — the population of the town, as seen on the Welcome to Wilamette sign on the helicopter ride to the mall — and rewards the player with 20 measly points and Mega Man’s MegaBuster weapon. Dope!

Interview with Devil May Cry 4 Strategy Guide Author: Dan Birlew

December 12th, 2007 Seth Killian

Writer Dan Birlew talks about the ins-and-outs of his game guide-writing dream job, dishes Devil May Cry 4 details, and then, for some reason, quotes Van Gogh. You can preorder his masterpiece from Prima here.

1. Can you give us a little background about you and the strategy guide world and how they coalesced with the Devil May Cry franchise?

The day I started writing about the first Devil May Cry, I knew that players of the game would be seeking a competent strategy guide to help control the mayhem. I was already quite experienced by that time, having written thirteen guides for other games. But this project proved to be a bigger challenge than my previous titles. I was excited by the style and play of the game, knew it would be an immediate success, and looked forward to the public’s reaction.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles Reviewer’s Guide + Producer Interview!

November 16th, 2007 Seth Killian

The Reviewer’s Guide goodness continues to flow. In addition to a great breakdown of basics like game mechanics and scoring, there’s also fun stuff like a review of the game’s weapons, lots of character details and backstory, and even an interview with RE: UC producer Masachika Kawata. And if that wasn’t enough to entice your clicking finger, did you know Wesker was 38 years old, 138 cm (I think that’s approximately 23 feet), 84.5 kg, with O-type blood? No? Then this is news you cannot miss! Read NOW or cry yourself to sleep in ignorance.

Zack and Wiki: Tips, Tricks, and Interviews from our Reviewer’s Guide

November 5th, 2007 Seth Killian

Capcom has started sending out some really cool paper guides alongside games we send to the press for review. They aren’t quite Prima-style guides, but they’re about 100x more fun than most instruction manuals, and offer more detailed (and more fun) pointers on how to use the Wii-mote in game, walk-throughs for a few puzzles (there’s your spoiler warning), and an interview with the producer Takeshita-san. Anyway it’s filled with good info and great art, so we thought we’d share. Whee!

New podcast from Bionic Commando producer, Ben Judd

October 30th, 2007 Seth Killian

Head over to our Bionic Commando site and click the “Top Secret” button to access the podcast. You might think that a big “Top Secret!” button with no password of any kind is not the best place to store secrets, but that’s because you are not as smart as we are. If you ARE able to unearth the podcast, you will thrill to Ben (”don’t call me Benn”) Judd discussing:

- his memories of the original Bionic Commando- how he got started at Capcom Japan and how he became a producer

- why he wants to bring back the Bionic Commando franchise

- the advantages and disadvantages of bringing back old franchises in games and movies, and the challenges surrounding this kind of move

- whether games are art or not, and if they can make you cry

- about designing and creating the new BC game, and the cultural conflicts in that

- killing a bum, just to watch him die.
