Random’s “Mega Ran” is Blowing Up

June 12th, 2008 Seth Killian

Wired’s always-entertaining music blog, the Listening Post, has a nice piece up on Capcom Unity’s golden child, Random.

Random talks about the love for Mega Man that inspired his Mega Ran album, and talks at length about our crazy policy of encouraging the good stuff from our fans instead of, you know, suing them. Check it out here.

PS- we only give thumbs-up to the GOOD fan stuff–your hentai mugen Kobun games are still banned.

New Resident Evil 5 Producer Interview

June 10th, 2008 Seth Killian

Gamevideos is hosting a new video interview (from Garnett Lee?) with Resident Evil 5 superproducer Jun Takeuchi.

Takeuchi-san talks about what’s been happening in terms of the story (game takes place shortly after RE4), the fate of the Umbrella Corporation, the demise of S.T.A.R.S., and Chris Redfield’s new organization, and the game’s oxymoronically *great* zombie AI.

“The verticality of combat”: Kraig K drops science on Dark Void

June 4th, 2008 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

Dark Void finally emerged from the shadows during CAPTIVATE08, and you guys are undoubtedly seeing tons of cool stuff hitting on the game. Dark Void was one of the standout titles from the event — sure, everyone knew they were going to dig RE5, but Dark Void grabbed attention with its great visuals, interesting spin on third-person action and team pedigree. Here’s a great look at the game (at least, as much as we have revealed thus far) with Capcom’s own Kraig Kujawa hitting all the pertinent communication points. That’s some solid media training!

During his whirlwind European tour, Adam Boyes (Capcom’s US Director of Production) sat down with gamesindustry.biz to talk about what he looks for in a development partner, from the mix of studio talents right down to pitching the idea itself.

This is a bit “games biz” insider-y (shocking from gamesindustry.biz!), but if you want to see what making games is REALLY all about, it’s solid gold. Check it out here!

Reclusive Eccentric Ben Judd Grants Interview

May 15th, 2008 Seth Killian

Deeko is running a nice interview with Capcom’s own red-headed stepchild, Ben Judd! Ben talks Bionic Commando Rearmed music, multiplayer, and the future of downloadable games with the help of some surprisingly thoughtful questions from the interviewer.

Check it out here, (or just read this, the part where they talk about how awesome Capcom community efforts are):

Not being content delivering the AAA titles we’ve come to know and love, Capcom is also embracing the gaming community and actually listening to gamers; and listening it has.

Okay that’s not an A+ sentence construction, but Capcom Unity ftw!, and remember to check out the latest Bionic Commando podcast HERE!

Kotaku talks to Ben Judd about bringing Western games East

April 30th, 2008 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

Judd-sanKotaku’s Man In Japan, Brian Ashcraft, has a long-ish feature with Capcom’s Ben Judd and Gearoid Reidy on the challenges inherent in bringing Western games to the Land of the Rising Sun. It’s a pretty interesting article — more so if you’re involved in the production of video games — and hits on all sorts of tricky issues that must be overcome, including tough text translations, the merits of dubbing vs. subtitling spoken dialog and good old-fashioned cultural differences.

The article also contains this bit:

‘In Japan, we can’t do community. It’s considered a liability here.’ There are too many unknowns with community sites. What if an employee says or does something stupid? The lack of direct corporate control is dangerous.

Scary! We’re doing/saying stupid stuff on Unity every day, but it seems to be okay with y’all. Do us a favor and don’t tell anyone in Japan, por favor.

Plunder Developer Interview

April 3rd, 2008 Seth Killian

Gamasutra sits down with Plunder developer, ex-Bungie veteran, coop multiplayer nut, and president of Certain Affinity studio, Max Hoberman (actually 80% less dour than he appears in pic above, in which he is seated next to an extremely old bowl of cereal).

Max bores down on the inspiration behind Plunder, the challenges of cross-platform development, and when we can expect to finally be bored by pirates (hint: never). Click here for the full piece.
