This is part nine in an extended series of articles from David Sirlin, detailing the changes we’ve made to the rebalanced mode of the new Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix project. The previous articles can be found here. This week focuses on the character so cliched that he stands out even among a strong field of cliche contenders: Hitenryu kung-fu master Fei Long!
Balancing Fei has been a long and rocky road, so this is a long entry, but it’s also a ton of fun for Fei Long fans and game design nerds alike. Read on!
Part 9: Fei Long
Fei Long is usually considered one of the five worst characters in the original Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, but he’s still pretty deadly if he can get close to the opponent and get his offense going. The trouble is, it’s very hard for him to ever get close enough to most characters to get it going. Also, his Flying Kicks move (aka Dragon Kicks, aka “Chicken Wing”) is just too hard for most players (including myself) to physically execute. Unlike the other Tiger Knee-like moves, the Flying Kicks required you to start with *back* on the stick, then go down/back, down, down/forward, forward, up/forward + kick.

Sometimes my job is really fun, as is the case today. In working towards the release of Okami, we have been providing our partners with some amazing pieces of Okami art in order to put together beautiful articles about the game. Just take a look at the latest EGM or Play (with POSTER!) to see what I’m talking about. In fact, we’ve given them so much art, they’ve never used it all. Ten DVDs full of art go a long way, let me tell you.
To celebrate the launch of Okami on the Wii, we wanted to find a special way to thank all the vocal Okami fans that encouraged us to take a second shot at success with this title. We looked at special tiny art books for preorder, but the format didn’t do the art justice and we wanted to reward the fans of the PS2 version as well.
So, without further adu, I’d like to present http://www.okamiart.com. This is a collection of almost every piece of Okami art we’ve made, set up in beautiful gallery form for your downloadable pleasure. Working with our friends at Udon, there’ s also a beatiful large art book you can order from the site.
Featuring original art, character art, backgrounds, desktop downloads, chat icons, and even a user fan art section, http://www.okamiart.com is everything you ever wanted to see of our favorite goddess turned wolf.
Also, in the coming weeks, we’ll be having some fan art competitions both on http://www.okamiart.com and our friends over at DeviantArt.com. With some amazing prizes, you should get drawing today and submit them to our expert panel of judges for both internet fame and some exclusive Okami items.
Thank you again for all your support and remember to buy Okami for the Wii on April 15th!

This is part eight in an extended series of articles from David Sirlin, detailing the changes we’ve made to the rebalanced mode of the new Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix project. The previous articles can be found here. This week focuses on the world’s tallest Thai, the kickboxer Sagat.
Sagat
Sagat—well actually “Old Sagat”—is one of the best characters in ST. He’s even soft-banned in Japan, meaning there’s a tacit agreement not to play him, even though you are technically allowed. He might not be as strong of a character as Balrog or Dhalsim overall, but the problem is that there are several matches where he just dominates. His Tiger Shots (fireballs) are so powerful that many characters spend the entire game trying to get around them. I think everyone knows that this nerf is coming.

Here’s the straight story on the glorious highs, devastating lows, and delicious middles behind making Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, from the game’s producer, Rey Jimenez:
–
Long time, no see Street Fighter fans. Sorry for not writing in a few months, but hopefully David Sirlin’s articles have been keeping you in the loop on HD Remix news. The reason I haven’t posted in a while is that there has been a lot of changes in HD Remix and we really had to focus on what was going on with the game. But now, I think it’s time I give you guys the run down on what’s been going on the past few months.
First of all, creating HD Remix has turned out to be a much more difficult task than we could’ve anticipated. There have been many recent challenges ranging from developing rock-solid netcode from the ground up to creating super-polished art for that truly lives up to the name Street Fighter. If we had gone the “good enough” route, you probably would be playing the game right now, but that wasn’t the route we wanted to take here at Capcom.

This is part seven in an extended series of articles from David Sirlin, detailing the changes we’ve made to the rebalanced mode of the new Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix project. The previous 6 articles can be found here. This week’s article focuses Balrog “What’s a kick?” the Boxer.
With Balrog near the top of the original Super Turbo characters, remixing him was more about putting a collar on some of his most brutal tricks while still keeping him competitive, fun, and, well… like Balrog!
Balrog
Balrog is generally considered to be tied for the best character in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo (ST). Pretty much everyone ranks Balrog and Dhalsim as top, with some Americans adding in Old Sagat, some Japanese adding in Vega, and a few people claiming Chun Li. But there’s not much debate about Balrog (or Dhalsim) being top.
The knee-jerk reaction is to nerf, nerf, nerf (that’s internet-speak for “reducing the power level” of something). I said in my first article that we would leave the top characters top, so it’s been quite a test of willpower to follow my own advice and avoid bringing down the hammer on Balrog.

The chart comes from Matt Matthew’s The Rating Rankings article over at Next-Gen, according to which Capcom pulls in at a healthy #3 overall.
According to my own analysis, we’re secretly #1, since everyone knows Final Fantasy fanboys don’t count, and Nintendo is more like a force of nature than an actual publisher. I dunno if this is quite the last word on the subject, but certainly an interesting read. You can find more discussion of this article over at the always-juicy Neo-Gaf forums.

This is part six in an extended series of articles from David Sirlin, detailing the changes we’ve made to the rebalanced mode of the new Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix project. The previous 5 articles can be found here. This week’s article focuses on our beret-wearing sexpot, Cammy.
In a nutshell, this revised Cammy finally lets you do everything you always wanted to do–and you may even win a match now and again! The new Cammy is a ton of fun and will hooligan roll her way right into your heart. Read on for the changes:
Cammy
Cammy is considered one of the five worst characters in ST (Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo) along with Zangief, Blanka, Fei Long, and T.Hawk. It’s interesting how much better she is now with so few changes, and even one nerf.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand we’re back.
This is part five in an extended series of articles from David Sirlin, detailing the changes we’ve made to the rebalanced mode of the new Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix project. The first article went into some details about the design philosophy behind some of the changes, with subsequent articles on Ryu, T. Hawk, and Ken. This week brings us Brazilian baller Blanka, who I can tell you (after playing him for a few hours) has definitely gotten a lot more, um… beastly.
Blanka
Blanka is considered bottom tier in ST, but even in that game he has a lot of potential and a lot of things going for him. The throw range on his bite is enormous. His crossup (jumping short) is excellent and easy. After the crossup, you can go for a combo, a bite, a blocked hit into a bite, another crossup, or a blocked hit into another crossup. Also, Blanka’s roll attack does really good damage. HD Remix Blanka retains all those good features, and gets some boosts.
Horizontal Rolling Attack
In ST, most characters can hit back Blanka’s roll after blocking or even being hit by it. In HD Remix, it recovers faster, but it’s still not completely safe. Dhalsim and Balrog are still able to hit it back easily (with standing fierce and jab rushing punch, respectively). Read the rest of this entry »

Sitting on the floor while gaming sucks. If you’ve got a tile floor, all your body heat is immediately sucked out; hardwood is incredibly uncomfortable and we won’t even talk about the horror of rug burns (for all our sakes). Over the years, I’ve experimented with various gaming/seating solutions, everything from a beanbag to an office chair, but short of dragging a giant La-Z-Boy into my man-dungeon (the one small spot in the house where my action figures, video games and comic books used to live, before I had kids), nothing really worked out well. I’ve seen a few “game chair” thingees over the years, but always remained skeptical. Skeptical, that is, until Jamie Duran from Ultimate Game Chair came in with the Renegade Game Chair. Super Tuesday? Feh. Primaries? Meh! We all know what democracy was really meant for: voting on zany alternate costumes for videogame characters.
As you may know, We Love Golf! features alternate Capcom costumes for each of its 10 characters. With the game coming to the US and Europe, the team is adding two new characters, and asking fans pick their alternate Capcom outfits.
You can vote for two alternate costumes–one for new the male character, and one for the female character. For the female character, the choices for alternate costumes are Cammy (Street Fighter), Morrigan (Darkstalkers), Rouge (Power Stone), Roll Caskett (Mega Man Legends), and Ashley Graham (Resident Evil). For the men, the costume options are Frank West (Dead Rising), Balrog (Street Fighter), Guy (Final Fight), Ken (Street Fighter), Dhalsim (Street Fighter), and Captain Commando (duh).
To vote, head over to the main page of the Capcom blog. You’ll find the two polls on the right side of the page. Make your voice heard and vote for your two favorites today.
