With the recent announcement of Capcom and MotoGP’s glorious 5-year partnership, it was safe to assume the deadbeats from Capcom Europe would be at the big MotoGP event in Jerez Spain, cluttering up a perfectly good motorcycle race with videogames. Pictured above is Capcom Europe’s Michael Pattison trying unsuccessfully to get an autograph from Dorna Sports (they own MotoGP) CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta.
Check out the flickr pool (thanks Ben!) for bikes, babes, and shot-cluttering bald heads, and pick up MotoGP 2007 here.

As you probably already know, our recent Capcom Digital Day event was a media event. Meaning, the invites were extended only to gaming press and media folks, as opposed to the general public. What you probably didn’t know was that we actually extended a few “community” invites to the Capcom community: Loyal Capcom community fans who happened to be located around the San Francisco area.
I followed two of them, Tony and Alex, around for most of the event, getting their informal impressions on what they saw and taking pictures of the whole thing. At the end of which held a special surprise for them!

A buncha pics from the Capcom WonderCon installation, courtesy of Capcom intern Lily. Despite owning some kind of fancy SLR she opted to go with a more “street” feel to these pics, which include plenty of Capcom game stations, UDON Street Fighter artist Long Vo doing custom drawings for da fans, and of course lots and lots of cosplay.
We have no excuse for Gerald.

The rumors are true–a new build of SFIV has hit Japanese arcades. Though still far from complete, the new build does have some additional content beyond the version recently on display at GDC, and we have some pictures of a few of the machines with people playing on stages never before seen publicly.

Giant hotel suite + free drinks + food (okay, pretty much just pizza and maraschino cherries) + the only SFIV cabinents on the continent = instant party. There was plenty of shouting, some money matches broke out, and we kept everything in check with some anti-stink spray. The tournament was won by “Debonair” Dan Boutros (pictured above) playing a filthy cheap Blanka.
While suite access was limited to press and some special guests, there will be more of this to come soon. Check out the flickr set for the full story.

Day 2 in Tokyo but the first official day of AOU. The kids–they are crazy for the SFIV. What’s worse is that these aren’t even really kids–today the show is open only to business people but it was hard to tell from the lines waiting to play. Check out today’s flickr set here for some shots of the mobs waiting to play, mysterious cute stuff, and plenty of cheesecake.
Most of the photos speak for themselves (translation: I am so tired I could cry and am too lazy to talk them up), but beyond the sound of 12 billion “hadokens” ringing in my ears, the days highlights included running into a bunch of Tokyo-area Street Fighter personalities, including Mr. Matsuda, Mr. Sawatari (Editor-in-Chief of Arcadia), Chamu Chun, famous Necro player PinoAB7, and the irrepressible Miu.
Also from the Capcom booth–we apparently endorse the product line of an excitable guy in briefs. Probably there’s an explanation for this but I prefer bemused mystification.

Manga magnates Shonen Jump held their annual Jump Festival at the Makuhari Messe convention center just outside of Tokyo, on December 22nd and 23rd. As far as I can determine, few, if any, were caught actually jumping at the Jump Fest.
The relatively XBOX360-indifferent Japanese waited over 3 hours to play the 360 version of Devil May Cry 4, and the line to play the PS3 version was nearly 4 (count them! four!) hours long. As you can see pictured above, producer Kobayashi-san also took the stage to demonstrate, playing as both Nero and Dante.
The fest also had the first playable version of the new game Rosario + Vampire, which, in a shocking move, Capcom has decided isn’t quite right for release in the Western market. There were also predictably well-attended panels with voice actors and actress from the forthcoming Rosario + Vampire anime series. Attendees were also treated to the first showing of an exclusive trailer for Monster Hunter 2nd G.

Sub-zero temperatures and at least a 45-minute wait didn’t stop Devil May Cry fans to play Devil May Cry 4 on the PS3 and Xbox 360 at this year’s New York Anime Festival. Yes, actually play DMC4 before it hits stores on February 5th!
Thank you to all of you that came by our booth. And sorry for not letting in all the under-17 year olds to play—I know you understand even though you were hating on us.
P.S.: Ashley—we’ll see you at the next festival, and first in line to play Devil May Cry?
P.P.S.: Mom and Daughter team—we’re still waiting for you to post that video of Mom playing DMC4!

The line to play DMC4 stretches around the corner

If only you took life so serious, too

A visit from Nero himself

I Object! Go wait in line!

Hey, isn’t that Mario playing Zack & Wiki?

One of my favorite parts of the Tokyo Game Show is the cosplay “alley.” Every year, the outdoor walkway area between two of the main halls is overtaken by more Aeriths, Soras, Morrigans and random girls in maid costumes than should rightfully be assembled in sticky Tokyo September weather. This year, camera in hand, I went in search of intrepid Capcom fans, expressing their love of our titles by spending literally weeks designing their costumes.

I got the chance to check out the Resident Evil: Extinction movie premiere at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino last week along with several of my Capcomer colleagues. We had a RE: The Umbrella Chronicles kiosk onsite to demo the game to movie premiere attendees who were universally impressed by the ease of play with the Wii remote. I was able to take a bunch of pictures of the event and surroundings and made mental notes of a bunch of observations to share with you all:

Alices come in all shapes and sizes: Sony pulled an eye-catching PR stunt by parading an unending line of “Alices” throughout the casino floor.

Hollywood premieres love candy: There was literally a mountain of candies, popcorn, sodas, and other libations for all to partake before the movie started.

Zombies can be sexy: I was surprised by a new breed of zombies at the after party which featured scantily clad models with spray-painted camouflage and zombie makeup over their bodies. Don’t remember seeing those in the movie!

There’s exclusive and then there’s “Exclusive”: Even if you were lucky enough to get an invite to the exclusive after-party, there was a separate after-party in the pool area of the hotel where bodyguards blocked the way of ‘civilians’ from mingling with the likes of RE movie stars Ali Larter, Ashanti (with boyfriend Nelly), and Mike Epps or attendees like Pam Anderson and Sylvester Stallone (”Yo”).

As for the movie, I had a blast and perhaps enjoyed it more than my fellow Capcomers, but I’ve always had a fondness for zombie flicks of any kind (in a prior existence, I used to go by the moniker of Dr Zombie). The movie was much faster-paced than the prior 2, and it was a relief to have most of the movie occur in the daylight instead of the dark, claustrophic feel of the prior two movies. Whereas some may think the creators went too far astray with Alice’s new ’super’ powers as well as the ’super’ zombie breed that are now super fast and strong – it provided for some new (faster) action scenes that kept the movie rolling along. Lots of fun scares and some memorable lines makes this a good popcorn treat. I would rank this just below the original and better than RE: Apocalypse. Even though this is the ‘final chapter’ of the trilogy – the ending of the movie makes it super obvious that there’ll be more Alice action to come!
