Okami Art School?

Win a Wii with Okami!

April 16th, 2008 Colin

I wish I could draw like this. Truly I do. Because if I could draw like Anna Horner (the artist of the above fan art), I could enter the official Okami fan art contest over at DeviantArt. To celebrate the launch of Okami on the Wii, we’ve (wii’ve?) teamed up with DeviantArt to really let your inner artist shine.

Create any art inspired by our favorite sun-god-turned wolf, and submit it to DeviantArt.com for a chance to win a brand new Nintendo Wii, a copy of the game, and a year subscription to DeviantArt!

If, like me, you not much of an artist and think pictionary is worst torture any family can undertake, you can still view the amazing submissions that have already been made to the site at http://browse.deviantart.com/projects/contests/2008/okami/.

If that’s still not enough Amaterasu for you, don’t forget about the constantly updating Okamiart.com site that features both fan art and most of the concept and development art that was used to make the game!

Finally, if you haven’t picked up the game yet, what are you waiting for? Okami for the Wii is in stores now!

Sheng Long Revisited

April 4th, 2008 Seth Killian

For a lot of us, the Legend of Sheng Long is like the Contra code–part of the very fabric of our gaming history. It’s not as well-known in Japan, however, so project manager Natsuki Shiozawa breaks it down on Capcom Japan’s SFIV blog:

“So who’s Sheng Long?” Let me explain.

It all goes back to when Street Fighter II was released in 1991. You all remember Ryu’s line, right? “You must defeat my dragon punch to stand a chance!” (It seems like a lot of you do.)

His line, however, on the original American arcade version was as follows:

Okamiart.com - A Gift to all Okami Fans

April 2nd, 2008 Colin

Okamiart.com

Sometimes my job is really fun, as is the case today.  In working towards the release of Okami, we have been providing our partners with some amazing pieces of Okami art in order to put together beautiful articles about the game.  Just take a look at the latest EGM or Play (with POSTER!) to see what I’m talking about.  In fact, we’ve given them so much art, they’ve never used it all.  Ten DVDs full of art go a long way, let me tell you.

To celebrate the launch of Okami on the Wii, we wanted to find a special way to thank all the vocal Okami fans that encouraged us to take a second shot at success with this title.  We looked at special tiny art books for preorder, but the format didn’t do the art justice and we wanted to reward the fans of the PS2 version as well.

So, without further adu, I’d like to present http://www.okamiart.com.  This is a collection of almost every piece of Okami art we’ve made, set up in beautiful gallery form for your downloadable pleasure.  Working with our friends at Udon, there’ s also a beatiful large art book you can order from the site.

Featuring original art, character art, backgrounds, desktop downloads, chat icons, and even a user fan art section, http://www.okamiart.com is everything you ever wanted to see of our favorite goddess turned wolf.

Also, in the coming weeks, we’ll be having some fan art competitions both on http://www.okamiart.com and our friends over at DeviantArt.com.  With some amazing prizes, you should get drawing today and submit them to our expert panel of judges for both internet fame and some exclusive Okami items.

Thank you again for all your support and remember to buy Okami for the Wii on April 15th!

Shocking! MSN’s article on biggest game surprises wouldn’t be complete without Resident Evil

March 31st, 2008 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

zombie dogs!As soon as this article popped up on my Google News alert for Resident Evil, I knew exactly what the screen shot would be, without even checking. True story: back in 1995 or so (back during my first stint at Capcom), we were receiving monthly code updates from the RE team and showing them to anyone and everyone to get them interested in this weird new game. I was in Texas at a superlame retail show, of all places, playing the latest build on a monitor in front of a crowd of about 25 - 30 interested gamers. I was so absorbed in the game that I totally tuned out all the folks behind me and entered this hall for the first time (it had been locked in previous builds). When those goddamned dogs crashed through the windows for the first time ever in the US, I literally dropped the PS1 controller on the floor, causing the crowd to laugh and Jill, regrettably (as the save system had yet to be implemented), to be eaten. MSNBC busts plots wide open, leaving spoilers in its wake like drunken wakeboarders in Lake Havasu during Spring Break, but it’s certainly an interesting read.

N+ Devs Get a D- in Logic 101

March 27th, 2008 Adam "TheBooya" Boyes

I was reading the recent blog post from the N+ developers Metanet regarding how on XBLA ‘Now there’s like a hundred games, and they’re all $&*%.’ and it got me a bit pissed. No, not because they hate Rocketmen (others do too), but more because I think they’re wrong - not about their opinion, but more about their solution.

From independent music to independent movies to independent games, the same theme runs through them all – Only a very small percentage of them are any good. Most of them (to use the Metanet dev team’s phrase) “are utter $&*%.” The Metanet guys even mentioned in their interview that when you go to GameHippo, only one out of every thousand games is good. So their solution to the ‘problem’ of XBLA is to open up and allow thousands of $&*%%y games to be put on XBLA without any oversight from anyone? Huh? How does that solve anything?

#3: It’s the New #1

March 4th, 2008 Seth Killian

The chart comes from Matt Matthew’s The Rating Rankings article over at Next-Gen, according to which Capcom pulls in at a healthy #3 overall.

According to my own analysis, we’re secretly #1, since everyone knows Final Fantasy fanboys don’t count, and Nintendo is more like a force of nature than an actual publisher. I dunno if this is quite the last word on the subject, but certainly an interesting read. You can find more discussion of this article over at the always-juicy Neo-Gaf forums.

Like Ace Attorney? Sure you do! Read Portugese? Uh, maybe?

February 28th, 2008 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

Brazillian flagLately, I’ve been receiving many media requests from Brazil which leads me to believe that A) Carnaval is over and all the lovely ladies have put their clothes back on and B) that the games industry is starting to heat up down there like a hot afternoon near the Equator. Anyhoo, Brazillian blogger Claudio Prandoni has managed to tear himself off the thong-laden beaches long enough to conduct and then translate an interview with Capcom Entertainment’s Colin Ferris about Apollo Justice, our latest entry in the Ace Attorney series (as you well know). Check it, if’n you speaka da Portugese.

(Couldn’t really work him in to the post, but didn’t want to forget him)
