For those not in “the industry,” as we call it (to our everlasting shame), GDC is the annual gathering of the supernerds; the be-all, end-all mecca for the men and women who actually crank out these special, magical treasures we shamelessly refer to as “product” in marketingland. Last week, Capcom crashed the 2008 Game Developers Conference in a big way. While coders were getting their code on across the street at the Moscone Center, a few Capcom staffers set up basecamp at the St. Regis Hotel, ensconced in a lovely suite that contained both flavors of Bionic Commando as well as the first two Street Fighter IV arcade machines to hit the US. It was three days of pizza, video games and high energy. More follows, so come along with me to reminisce about last week… Read the rest of this entry »

We’ve started a couple of “official” groups on Facebook (Which by now, everyone and their grandmother’s cousin should have an account on). Next time you’re on Facebook, be sure to also drop by and show your support for Capcom and Bionic Commando by becoming a fan of the groups on Facebook!
Becoming a fan is easy. You can either click on the links above, or search for either Capcom and Bionic Commando after logging into Facebook. While you’ll get various results for them, the one you’re looking for is of the type “Game” and should have “Become a Fan” as an available option (As opposed to “Join Group” for the others). After becoming a fan, you’ll by default receive notices on any updates we make in regards to the group, making it easy for you to keep up on the latest Capcom and Bionic Commando news.
Be sure to share the fandom with your friends on Facebook as well. The more the merrier!

The Bionic Command podcast is back, bringing you more of the best in games-y gaijin to wash up on Japan’s shores:
It’s two gaming media veterans for the price of one: podcast legend and “Gaming Jesus” Mark MacDonald, and the founder of localization company 8-4 and longtime Japan resident John Riccardi, join us on the show, discussing the games industry in Japan and abroad. We’ll also be talking about the Alpha version of Bionic Commando, and debating the price point for Bionic Commando Rearmed.
Incidentally I ran into Mark last week in Tokyo, and as far as I could see none of that stuff is true–in fact I thought he smelled delightful.
The team also has a poll asking whether people would prefer to pay 10$ or 15$ for Bionic Commando Rearmed. While I’m guessing the results will be incredibly close, I’m personally voting 15$ because a) the game is that good b) I dislike others and want them to suffer.

In college, I had a short stint working concert security with StaffPro, aka “those dudes with the yellow jackets who throw you out of rock shows when you do stupid stuff.” My first gig was a Faith No More/Metallica show at Shoreline. AWESOME! I was getting paid to stand around and tell people not to be idiots while watching two amazing bands rip it up for a hometown crowd. I went on to see FNM many more times, as well as some of Mike Patton’s other bands, like Mr. Bungle. These days, Mike is doing a lot of VO (voice over) work, both for games and movies, as well as creating music that stretches across, past, over and through just about any boundary or style you could think of, then makes some up just for good measure.
Mike recently hooked up with some of the Bionic Commando team in San Francisco to record initial VO for BC, and the guys grabbed some shots. Gearoid (pronounced Ger-road, not like Metal Gear) has details on the session over on the official BC blog.

Ben Judd’s Bionic Commando podcast is back. This week the team locks horns with subhuman infidel Ryan Payton:
Two podcasts collide as Capcom’s Top Secret goes up against Konami’s Kojima Productions Report! The assistant producer at Kojima Productions, Ryan Payton, tells us about Metal Gear Solid 4 and working with Hideo Kojima, while we choose the worst and hardest classic games to play through this year, and deliver the official response to the petition calling for Bionic Commando on Wii!

Since these were smuggled out of the Bionic Commando skunkwerks (insert Bothan spies ref here), I was only able to get the glossy prints, which have in turn been photographed for you. You could call this a lot of things, but let’s call it “keeping it real.” I mean hey, you read scans from magazines all the time, right?
Cool stuff regardless, and provides great insight into the overall style of what’s to come. Check it out here.

In this installment, Ben Judd speaks with the dashing Simon Viklund (pictured above, shamelessly attempting to curry the favor of Inafune-san by wearing a Mega Man shirt), director of the much-anticipated Bionic Commando Rearmed.
Simon Viklund, the Director of Bionic Commando Rearmed, joins the podcast today to tell us all about this fantastic return to side-scrolling action. Everything you want to know about Rearmed is right here. The multi-talented Simon also makes all of us feel worthless in comparison, as he discusses the music in Bionic Commando, where he is the Sound Director.
The new podcast is here! Be sure also to check out the BC team’s Bionic Commando developer blogs, which give you some great behind-the-scenes stuff from multiple perspectives including Capcom Japan and Capcom Europe, as well as Swedish developer Grin’s take on things.

Contrary to some early reports, this game is not the original Bionic Commando, but is (as they call it below) a “makeover” of the original. This means you get the awesome mechanics and gameplay you know and love, but with a bunch of new weapons, fresh graphics, cool boss fights, etc. Read the full press release below (it actually contains some details worth hearing), and head over to IGN.com for screens and a video that will answer all your questions.

On the heels of our last batch of randomness, here’s some more stuff cluttering the place up that I thought people might get kick out of:
A “threadless”-style Bionic Commando tee that features our hero doing what he loves best–leaping from a tall building. Probably he’s about to dramatically grapple his way to somewhere awesome (or perhaps the disappointments of his post-apocalyptic lifestyle have finally caught up with him and these are his last moments).
Totally sweet Saturday Night Slammasters water bottle. It may have been bad 90s music addling my brain, but I thought Slammasters was really fun. Later in life I had a chance to play against the guys that won the US national Slammasters championships (yes, Capcom had a national tournament for Slammasters, for no readily apparent reason). They squished me like a bug, but I can still enjoy this water bottle.
Capcom Fighting Jam fan. The Japanese text and the fact that the western market doesn’t seem as into fanning themselves generally (it’s called air-conditioning technology, and the rest of the world should look into it) suggests this was a Capcom Japan promo item only.
My trusty Capcom mug. Usually filled with our special blend of grade-D Capcom Coffee, the mug today contains Harvey Birdman, who has his own, tinier coffee mug.
And, to end on a substantially more baffling note, we have a what appears to be a Mega Man radio. When the promo product’s initial design was deemed “awesome, but not awesome enough” by our exacting Marketing department, the developer went back to the drawing board and produced exactly the same item, only this time with suction-cup feet. And the rest, my friends, is history.
