One Handed S-Kill on Street Fighter IV!

June 5th, 2008 Randy Reyes

I myself have had the honor of fighting Seth “S-kill” Killian in Street Fighter IV and have witnessed him not just playing the game but playing the game well! If you don’t believe me then check out the video.

It was shot guerilla-style by Unity member and CAPTIVATE08 special invitee Dubindoh, and it’s Capcom US’s Seth versus Capcom Europe’s Leo Tan last week at CAPTIVATE08.

Fight Club

February 1st, 2008 Seth Killian

We all know the first rule of fight club. The second should probably be “don’t post stories about fight club on the internet.” Nevertheless, Jared Rea is back with a new installment of his “No Country for Old Arcades” feature over at Gametap, detailing the best place to drink, bet, and fight–Street Fighter-style–in the entire Bay Area. And if anyone says they saw me there, they are a liar.

Forgotten Names!

January 24th, 2008 Colin

People wonder sometimes what we do all day.  Most of the time it’s just boring old work, but sometimes you get research something truly bizarre.  Such was the case today.

In a meeting early today, someone asked: “What are the names of the two characters in Forgotten Worlds?”

Well, the blue character we’ve used in a couple a fighting games, and his name is The Unknown Soldier.  Not a very imaginitive name, but at least he had one.  The red guy’s name was a lot harder to discover.  You could only play as him if you were the second player, so he just didn’t get as much notice.  We researched for awhile, looking both internally and over the web, hunting for his name.

Turns out he does have a name, though we only ever used it when he appeared as a thug in “Final Fight.”  Sending one of our helper zombies down into archives (we pay them in delicious brains), we uncovered his name and are happy to confirm that his name is Two P (2p) . . .

Didn’t think we could get less imaginitive than The Unknown Soldier, did you?

No Country for Old Arcades

January 24th, 2008 Seth Killian

Jared Rea of Gametap digs into the difficulties faced by US arcades by profiling a Bay Area landmark, Sunnyvale Golfland (SVGL). He looks back at SVGL’s legacy as a hotbed for testing new arcade games, talks to Street Fighter legend John Choi (an SVGL customer for over 15 years), and about how the location has withstood the challenges of a changing videogame landscape. Fun stuff–check it out here.

Super Battle Opera Season arrives!

January 3rd, 2008 Seth Killian

The most awesomely named tournament in the universe is back for 2008, sure to be full of hot arcade action as always. The Super Battle Opera (called boring old “Tougeki” in Japanese), is Arcadia magazine’s annual arcade fighting game tournament, with qualifying events held across Japan leading up to August’s three-day finals.

Although “SBO” is primarily a Japanese event, they have added qualifying spots for foreign players as well in recent years, based on the strong international competition found at events like the EVO Championship Series. Although the Japanese ran rampant at this year’s EVO finals, no foreign player has ever won SBO. Americans have finished as high as 3rd in years past, and last year the infamous Wolfe brothers (Alex and Graham) placed 5th in the Hyper Street Fighter II: Anniversary Edition tournament. Check out the video above of the Wolfe’s leveraging extreme patience and old fashioned cheap tactics to take out two of Japan’s most famous old-school players, Otochun and Komoda Blanka.

This year’s SBO game lineup includes Street Fighter III: Third Strike, as well as the original Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Click here for the full SBO 2008 game lineup.
