Awesome flash demo for Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney

January 15th, 2008 Seth Killian

Using the magic of flash, the wizards at Capcom have brought you this amazing “Mock Trial” demo. Yes, the demo is so cool that it actually gets its own name. What does the demo do? It offers you a feature-complete recreation of the first part of case one in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. Yes, you’re playing the real game.

Better still, using the embed code found HERE, you can slap the demo on to any webpage yourself. Just c+p the code and you’re good. Show your Ace Attorney colors and let your friends and enemies experience the courtroom hijinx as Apollo Justice uses his chords of steel and learns his legal chops.

2007 1UP Awards

December 19th, 2007 Chris Tou

For most, the end of the year usually is a time for too much eggnog, finally getting to touch a member of the opposite sex thanks to the magical Mistletoe, and making resolutions that you know you will never keep. However, the end of the year also signals the time for the reason you couldn’t keep those resolutions, videos games, to be given the proper recognition they deserve. 1up.com is getting the ball rolling, and among its nominees were several of our very own Capcom titles. The Best Adventure Game category looks really tough, especially as we’re competing with ourselves with 3 games our own games.

Devil May Cry 4 Visits Gotham

December 11th, 2007 Lindsay

Sub-zero temperatures and at least a 45-minute wait didn’t stop Devil May Cry fans to play Devil May Cry 4 on the PS3 and Xbox 360 at this year’s New York Anime Festival. Yes, actually play DMC4 before it hits stores on February 5th!

Thank you to all of you that came by our booth. And sorry for not letting in all the under-17 year olds to play—I know you understand even though you were hating on us.

P.S.: Ashley—we’ll see you at the next festival, and first in line to play Devil May Cry?

P.P.S.: Mom and Daughter team—we’re still waiting for you to post that video of Mom playing DMC4!

The line to play DMC4 stretches around the corner

Capcom rocks 1up.com’s Game of the Year 2007 Nominations

December 3rd, 2007 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

1up.com just spilled the beans on their categories and nominees for Game of the Year 2007, and we’re pleased as punch to see that there are several Capcom games included on their list.

We’re both amazed and excited to see Zack and Wiki on the 1up list for Game of the Year. Of course, we’re also realistic, seeing as how it’s a very long list and contains games like Bioshock and… well, other games, but Bioshock is on there, so I’m pretty sure I know right where that particular award is going: Ken Levine’s desk. And you know what? I’m alright with that.

If you’re not too busy now, might we suggest you follow the jump to 1up and vote for some of our fine, fine products? Danke! Remember: Guitar Hero, Call of Duty, Mario, Bioshock, etc. are all selling just fine, but Z-Dub could use some serious love!

Here’s how the award season is looking for Capcom at 1up:

Best Action Game:

  • Resident Evil 4 Wii edition

Best Adventure Game:

  • Zack & Wiki
  • Monster Hunter Freedom 2
  • Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations

Best Console Downloadable Game:

  • Super Puzzle Fighter II HD Remix

Game of the Year:

  • Zack & Wiki

“Is Our Children Reading?” OBJECTION!

December 3rd, 2007 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

mmmMayaTip of the hat to Kotaku to pointing us towards this Guardian blog on literacy concerns in the UK that gives the Ace Attorney series a major high-five.

Author Steven Poole responds to his own paper’s claims that “England has plummeted from third to 19th in an international league table of children’s literacy levels as pupils replace books with computer games.” Hm.

Here’s a clip from the piece:

“News headlines don’t tell you, for example, about the wonderfully batty series of games for the Nintendo DS starring Phoenix Wright… At a rough estimate, one Phoenix Wright game contains at least as much text as your average children’s novel… In my opinion, Phoenix Wright is funnier and cleverer than most TV made for adults.”

Helen LovejoyI once read an editorial piece in which the author posited an alternate universe where radio was invented before the written word, and how nanny-state types would react to children spending all their time ruining their eyes squinting at black ink rather than improving their knowledge of the world listening to radio dramas. Poole also imagines a similar situation in his posting.

Beyond the Ace Attorney series, imagine trying to succeed in a Final Fantasy title, undertake a quest in World of Warcraft, escort survivors in Dead Rising, or sing along with a song in Rock Band without varying degrees of literacy. Poole’s conclusion, I personally feel, is right on the money. For more along these lines, I highly recommend picking up Everything Bad is Good For You by Steven Johnson. And the latest Ace Attorney title, too ;)

Here’s a fun quote from the Guardian’s original piece on the findings:

“Unless children get a buzz out of reading, the computer will remain much more interesting to them.” — Mick Brooks, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers. Maybe that’s the problem; if you could catch a buzz from reading, perhaps more teens would be getting together on the weekends and binging on Oprah’s latest recommendation.

Ace Attorney PapercraftAce Attorney Papercraft 2

I love seeing the different things that our fans send in to us to prove their love for our games.  I’ve always considered myself a gamer, but there are levels of fandom far beyond my own.  The above papercraft is, in a word, excellent.  Congrats to the creator.  You are much better at art than I will ever be.  Can’t wait to see what gets sent our way when Apollo Justice steps into the courtroom.

MTV Interviews Ace Attorney Producer Minae Matsukawa

November 1st, 2007 Chris Tou

Minae Matsukawa

While we’re pretty sure no one is going to pass the bar exam just by playing Ace Attorney, curiosity still often begs the question of just where Ace Attorney’s legal system and inspirations come from. MTV finally put this, and other questions in front of Minae Matsukawa, the producer of Ace Attorney, so that we can obtain some inner peace.

MTV: The “Phoenix Wright” games are very funny, but as far as I know are not at all accurate to the way the legal system works. How did you decide upon the legal system in “Phoenix Wright”? Is it based on any real-world legal system? Or is it just designed to be one that simply works well as a game?

Matsukawa: Well, going back to how the game system was conceived, the team didn’t think of the court idea first, and instead was focused on the idea of uncovering lies and contradictions. Actually, what’s funny is when the Japanese press asks us about this same issue, they usually think we based the game’s system off of the American judicial system! But if we really had based the game off of a real court system, it might not be quite as interesting as a game, simply because court proceedings usually aren’t interesting, right? I think that more than the setting, the game itself has to be interesting. The system in the game is really, at its core, about chasing down witnesses and trying to catch them in the act of lying, so keeping this as the most important aspect of the game and gameplay in mind, we didn’t base the judicial system in “Ace Attorney” off of any real systems, but instead created something unique to the “Ace Attorney” world.

You can read the whole interview on MTV Multiplayer.
