Nyko PerfectShot: Making Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles even better!

December 14th, 2007 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

Nyko PerfectShot box Chris from Nyko stopped by the Capcom Unity labs to show off Nyko’s latest cool peripheral, the PerfectShot. As you’ve undoubtedly discovered by this point, playing Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles with the Nintendo Zapper can be fun, but the overall design of the Zapper doesn’t really lend itself to true arcade-style lightgunning. Nyko’s answer is much more true to what you would expect a lightgun to look — and more importantly — feel like. Bonus: it’s only $15! Follow the jump to see your stalwart Unity team rocking the PerfectShot in the Capcom demo room.

Randy, Seth and Chris T blast away with the PerfectshotThe PerfectShot unit fits, well, perfectly in your hand, the balance is great, it’s not very heavy and it looks damn cool when the Wii Remote is slipped into the body. The Remote slides in to the top part of the gun, and an orange “Don’t-shoot-me-it’s-just-a-toy!” plastic hinge flips up over the front to lock your Remote into place. Nice move, we don’t want to shatter our demo room HDTV LCD screen, as none of us could afford to replace it.

Ryuhei and Seth capping zombie hordesRandy had prepped a few saved games of RE:UC for the demo ahead of time, allowing us to unleash hell upon zombies and mutants galore. We had a crowd of people coming through the demo room to try out the PerfectShot, and people were having just about as much fun with the lightguns as they had with Rock Band.

Dual Wield! But what’s a lightgun game without a little John Woo action? No, not that John Woo action (although I found it much more fun than most reviewers did). I’m talking two-fisted, dual-wielding, Chow Yun Fat-at-his-finest bullet ballet! Unfortunately, RE:UC is not really designed for dual-wielding, ’cause you need to use the Nunchuck to reload, toss grenades or knife the bejeezmus out of scabrous biters and their ilk. End result is that RE:UC ended up becoming a three player game, with me lighting up the screen while Seth and Randy were relegated to fairly boring support/reload roles. Chris from Nyko assures us that other, undoubtedly lesser, lightgun games on the Wii work well with a two-PerfectShot approach, however.

Seth and Randy, not doing very wellLong story short, we dig the PerfectShot. We now have two of these babies hooked up to our Wii and have been co-op-ing our way through RE:UC between rounds of Puzzle Fighter. You can’t beat the price ($15!) or the design. We’re also big fans of Nyko’s Wii charging dock and battery pack, using them at various events like E3, Comic-con and Gamer Days. Consider the Nyko PerfectShot to receive the first Official Unity Gold Standard Quality Seal of Approval Medallion. Guess we should get around to Photoshopping one now…

Note to Kawata-san and the RE:UC team: we need a special dual wield mode in the next game (ala Saturn version of Virtua Cop 2). Sigh.
