Sad News: Monster Hunter and Resident Evil: Outbreak servers shutting down

November 30th, 2007 Seth Killian

This news was just confirmed internally, and I wanted people to know ASAP.

After more than 3 years of online service, the external company providing server hosting for both Resident Evil: Outbreak and Monster Hunter has decided to exit the PlayStation 2 online business altogether, with no possibility of outsourcing either the service or the technology.

This means that online gameplay for both games will come to an end on December 31, 2007. Fortunately, the single-player campaigns in both games will be unaffected by this change and will continue to provide hours of entertainment on both PlayStation 2 and backwards-compatible PlayStation 3 hardware. Thank you for supporting Capcom’s online titles over the years!

And just so you know, although these are older titles, we did want to make an effort to keep the fans happy and continue supporting online play. We’ve tried to extend the contract, move it someplace else, etc. It’s not happening. The hosting partner (who I guess remains nameless here) is just quitting the business entirely and doesn’t want to mess around with the time/money involved in porting anything. Thanks to everyone who has kept these games fun online for so many years.

I think it is bull to shut down a server to monster hunter…especially when a game is as popular as monster hunter….This will be the last online game i ever purchase from ya’ll….sorry but I can’t believe how you can expect us to be happy with the offline game…playing online is what makes the game fun and interactive there is so much stuff you can only get online…Capcom has lost a customer for good …..I believe this is ya’lls way of pushing people to buy the next monster hunter game….well i hope more people follow and abandon capcoms online gaming altogether..

regretfully

Please release server software so the game isn’t worthless!! Give us the ability to host the servers on our PCs ourselves and continue to play. (Tribes: Aerial Assault did this)

Think about the 300-500 constant online community.

I’ll miss that.

Ok. When the severs go down for MH and RE:OB please CAPCOM make a separate server, because i love MH so much i’ve only spent like 2 week playing and i love it, and always have. Please start up a separate sever, people are bored of single player and this is their only way out!

The game will be useless without online. Most of the gear to unlock is online only. I have over 500 hours logged into MH, i cant say that about any other ps2 game out there. i still play even today. Capcom please open up servers of your own or give out the info for players to open up the servers.

I acutally just started playing MH online just a few days ago. I realized how much fun it is to actually interact with people on the other end. For me, Monster Hunter was going to be a material Christmas present enough for me. But ever since someone had told me the terrible news about it coming offline, I was pretty heartbroken. Here I was, getting my hopes up, and now they’re pretty much shot. Capcom, if you can do anything, hear our pleas and host this still wonderful and exhilerating game on your own servers. Therefore, your sales won’t go down and you won’t lose too many fans to where it will affect you much. I haven’t played RE: Outbreak, but could you please do the same for those fans, too? Try and think this through more thoroughly, please?

It breaks my heart it really does I got so much out of playing MH with other people online. You have broken my heart capcom I wanted you to know that. It is deplorable that you release only one version of MH in the US on ps2 and then shutdown the servers. A honorable path would be to allow us to run our own servers I have hope that you may do the right thing so that your reputation will be upheld and a master piece shall remain un-mutilated. There are few authentic jewels in the gaming world and I believe you created one but you are on the verge of ruining it. A lot of companies choose to make profit over quality things which is a shame and thorn in the side of the gaming world. But sometimes a company decides it wants to be truly great. Perhaps a certain “company” should take a long look in the mirror and think carefully about which they would like to be. Make the wrong choice and you will have to square with that one day. And for the record i bought a ps2 just to play MH when it was first released. I do not regret anything about MH except for the fact I never got a group together to kick try and kick a raths tail off. It breaks my heart, i wanted you to know that…

I haven’t heard of Monster Hunter until now, but it sounds like a really popular game. I have, however, played Outbreak. I joined the scene too late to play File 2, but I enjoyed File 1 online, even though I died lots. Now how am I supposed to be a noob in a game I’m otherwise decent at, OR get a pairing ending from the ’secondary’ character’s point of view?

Is it truly that hard to just find another partner and forget about the old one entirely?

OMG!!!!!!!!!! How in the world can this Be happening…… Just got Full Blos thinking im finally getting to enjoy the greatness of online play with this miraculous game…. then i happen to run across this and everything i have been excited for is just brushed away….. You know what? i can understand a little that this may not be capcoms fault. But then again i was always told that if you want something bad enough you can find a way to get it even if you have to find a way around somehting. And i think this is exaclty what capcom should do. Either Make a way for us to be able to host our own servers or bring it back up altogether. And i agree 100% with va_thug on the buying capcoms games thing. To anyone that reads this message and knows any way to get closer to capcom ( email adresses of people who work there, Phone numbeers etc…) email me and inform me please (emails: xgoogleeyezx@yahoo.com). this wont be the last time capcoms hears from me….. i will try and try to get something arranged…..i know im not the only one of the fans that has had this kinda idea so please if any of yall wanta help me in any way just ask ill be glad for any support yall can give me. This game is to popular for them to shut down the most important feature of this game. and i wont alow it to be shut down so easily trust me they have alot of annoyed fans and this annoyed fan will not let this go down without a fight… SO WHOS WITH ME?

Dear Capcom,

Please bring back the servers. If you wish not to, please release the codes and ability to run our own servers. I was getting this for my brother to go along with his slimline ps2, but now I am sadly going to return the two copies and my network adapter for my chubby ps2…and it took me so long to find one too…

I just registered to leave a comment here for you Mr. Capcom… if that is your real name. Why not find a way to let us continue playing monster hunter online? I think i speak for alot of upset monster hunter fans when I say that the game is completely worthless without the ability to play online.

A lot of you apparently didn’t read the explanation as to why the servers shut down.If you DID read it it says

“the external company providing server hosting for both Resident Evil: Outbreak and Monster Hunter has decided to exit the PlayStation 2 online business altogether, with no possibility of outsourcing either the service or the technology.”

AKA It wasn’t CAPCOM’s decision to do it,So I really don’t understand why more than half of you are blaming them for taking the server’s down.

I can understand if they lost their server provider, but if you aren’t going to make any efforts to helping the situation, don’t bother making games based around online gameplay. Oh common, what makes this hoster any different? Nothing, there are hundreds of Server Providers that will gladly provide your company hosting. Am I supposed to believe Capcom can’t host their own server? This is obviously a cover up for their unwantingness to continue providing these online servers free. I can understand if you don’t want to provide us this free service, that’s fine, but at least provide the players with the means to host their own. It just seems that you want to cut out the “free gameplay” all together. When I bought Outbreak, I was under the impression I would be able to online play, being as it says so on the cover. Isn’t that a bit of false advertisement? I hope you intend on providing players with means to host servers, or recalling all on-shelf games and changing the packaging.

May I be one of the first to say: “What the fuck is that?”
I purchased both of these games, NOT for the horrible offline play, but for playing with friends and family online. Knowing the servers would be shutdown only a SHORT period after I have bought these games, I would have NEVER purchased your horrible, disgusting, faulty games. How I ask, is this legal? To just up and disband your online servers, knowing the back of the box I purchased has “Broadband internet play” inscribed on the it. I would just like to say that I will NOT purchase another game from either series or company, and WILL expect a full refund of my money for both games.

I would however like to thank you, for the online play you have brought to your customers. But other than that I would just like to say, Goodbye.

You will Not see me, or my money spent on one of your “games” again.
