One (well, 46, technically) for the books: Mega Man in the Guiness Book
April 28th, 2008 Chris "Kramez" Kramer
How the heck did this get past us? Back in March, the Guinness people published the Guinness World Records: Gamer’s Edition 2008, which contains an amazing amount of gamer ephemera and questionable records. Amongst the records recorded is “Most Number of Games In a Single Series,” handed to our very own Blue Bomber.
That’s right, the Mega Man franchise has been recognized as being milked like no other milking in the history of video game milkings! The Guinness Book recognizes 46 games, but I’m pretty sure that the actual total is far more than twice that number (even Wikipedia lists more than 100 titles). According to IGN, Guinness sez that:
There are 17 games in the “classic” series starring the original character. There are also 11 Mega Man X games, four Mega Man Zero games, two Mega Man ZX games, three Mega Man Legends games, six Mega Man Battle Network games, plus three Mega Man Star Force games
Let’s fix this number! Fer instance, off the top of my head, they are forgetting:
Mega Man Soccer (fun fact: Mega Man’s first appearance on the SNES!)
Mega Man Battle & Chase (only hit the US in the Mega Man Collection)
Mega Man Powered Up! (PSP remake of MM1)
Mega Man Rock Board (Japanese-only, Mega Man-themed board game)
Mega Man Power Battle (arcade game designed for kids)
Super Adventure Mega Man (Dragon’s Lair-stylee anime adventure, released in Japan around Mega Man’s tenth birthday)
Somebody get on this project and figure out how many friggin’ Mega Man games there have been, please. We’re counting Mega Man games only, not appearances in other games (Marvel Vs. Capcom, Dead Rising, Cannon Spike, etc. do not count) Semi-Official Capcom Gold Star of Complementarianism and some kinda random prize to whoever completes this assignment successfully!

Well, there’s Megaman 1-8. So that’s 8.
Rockman & Forte makes 9.
Dr. Wily’s Revenge 1-5 makes 14.
Megaman and Megaman 3 on the PC make 16.
Power Battles and Power Fighters make 18.
The weird ones, Rockboard, Soccer, Battle & Chase, Super Adventure and Rockman Strategy make 23.
The Powered Up! remake makes 24.
If you want to count the collections, the Gamecube and PS2 releases of those make 26.
The Wily Wars make 27.
Complete Works make 28.
Power Battle Fighters makes 29, and Battle and Fighters makes 30.
There was also a Mega Man on the Game Gear which makes 31, and a release of Rockman & Forte as Megaman & Bass on the GBA which makes 32.
The latter there also came out on the Wonderswan which is 33.
For mobile phones, Megaman appears 24 times, though sometimes as EXE or as X. This makes 57.
Speaking of X, and EXE. If you are counting THEM…
X through X8 make 65 games. XTreme, XTreme 2 and Command mission make 68.
Then you have the two X collections for 70, a re-release of X3 on three platforms for 73, Collection Special Box for 74, and the Maverick Hunter remake for 75.
Adding in the EXE games, there are 20 of them on various platforms putting us at 95.
There are four Megaman Zero games for 99, and two ZX games for 101.
Megaman Starforce adds six games for a total of 107.
Legends adds 9 games across sequels and platforms for a total of 118.
Going back to double check, I didn’t add in the extra releases of games on other platforms. So to round this out, there were extra releases of some of the X games, 10 to be exact, to put us at 128.
And finally: Super Adventure Rockman had two releases, so that corrects to 129.
That ought to cover it. 129 Mega Man games over the years. Crazy! Of course that doesn’t count cameos, or things like actual board games, but man, who wants to get into THAT?
Let’s see what i can do here…
MegaMan 1-6 on the NES/Famicom
Megaman 7 on the SNES/SFamicom
Megaman 8 on Saturn/PS1
Megaman In Dr. Wily’s Revenge on Game Boy
Megaman II, III, IV, V on Game Boy
Megaman on Game Gear
There was the Megaman- The Wily Wars (which was a remake of megaman 1-3 released on the genesis/megadrive)
Megaman & Bass on Super Famicom and GBA
Rockman & Forte Mirai kara no Chosensha on the WonderSwan (which, personally, i’d love to have here in the US on the GBA or DS)
Rockman Power Fighters on the NeoGeo Pocket
Mega Man 2 (Tiger handheld)
Mega Man 3 (Tiger handheld)
