Reasons Behind No SSF2T HD Remix Beta on PS3
March 14th, 2008 Seth Killian
Over in the Ask Capcom forum, Christian Svensson (Capcom’s Vice-President of Strategic Planning & Business Development) weighed in on some disappointment about the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix Beta not coming to PS3.
A few additional points:
1. We are resource constrained. This project already has gone over the original budget (we had a new budget approved to accomodate our dedication to its quality and the new features… there were even a few we wanted to do that had to get cut in the end… more on that in a post mortem blog or something). Anyway, we wanted to do a beta to test the new network features but even if it were possible for Sony to do, it would require 3 submissions (US, Europe, Asia/Japan) to reach the same global audience we can with MS in a single test and global submission.
2. We treat the PS3 extremely seriously. To date, we are still the only third party publisher doing cross platform, simultaneous digital releases (still working on the global simultaneous, but see the issues above on multiple submissions per territory as an issue). Believe it or not, this is not easy and to suggest we aren’t treating the PS3 as important would be ignorant of what we’re doing for it.
3. In my ideal world of worlds, we would have done a beta on each. That said, the effort and time (not to mention money) that would have taken, if it even could be done, probably would have pushed the project back another few months on our side. I suspect you guys would still like to play this title in this calendar year.
4. The beta for 360 will absolutely help the PS3. There is code parity across the two and any issues found in 360 will be fixed in PS3. So while PS3 owners won’t be able to participate in the beta, they will still benefit in the finished product.
5. Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 will be an excellent title on PS3. The lack of a bonus beta doesn’t make it not worth its asking price.
6. When you show me someone running a cross platform beta… I’ll be impressed, because that’s a hell of an investment.

I don’t think many people literally mean that Capcom hates the PS3, and are just showing that by not including it in the beta.
I think it’s understandable that many people are disappointed by the news, and likewise that they choose to make their disappointment known by posting on the forums or commenting on the blog entries. As you can see, there’s a great deal of excitement about SF2T:HDR among the PS3 community. Given how high the levels of excitement are, it’s not really surprising to see equally high levels of disappointment over an announcement like this.
We already had to wait on a longer release date due to Microsoft’s file size issues and now they get a beta and we don’t. So basically they get to enjoy a piece of history before those who invested more in the gaming community by purchasing the most advanced system to date a PS3. First Devil May Cry 4 and now this B.S. Oh and before I forget. Thanks Capcom for NOT listening to your loyal fans and making SFIV a 3-D game instead of 2-D. So what was the point of that fricken poll on Capcom Community. I’m through with you guys and moving on to the Guilty Gear series. They stay loyal to their TRUE fans instead of trying to make a few more bucks.
Talk about misinformed…you’re moving on to the Guilty Gear series because ‘they stay loyal to their true fans instead of trying to make a few more bucks’? Are you blind? How many versions of Guilty Gear X2 are there? By my count, we have GGX2, GGX2 #Reload, GGX2 Slash, GGX2 Accent Core, and GGX2 Accent Core Plus coming soon. As a Guilty Gear fan, let me be the first to inform you that Guilty Gear is sure as hell not innocent against accusations of ‘trying to make a few more bucks’.
Now, let’s look at all the spinoffs…Guilty Gear Isuka’s call to fame was a side-scrolling beat-em-up mode that looks like a team of work experience kids threw it together in a lunchtime and a 4 player versus mode that was buggy and unbalanced, Guilty Gear Judgment is a slightly better (but not good) side-scrolling beat-em-up with a version of Guilty Gear X2 chucked on to give the impression of a worthwhile purchase, Guilty Gear Dust Strikers is a poor attempt at Smash Bros./Jump Superstars style gameplay, and don’t even get me started on the Petit series.
Final nail in the coffin, for those not convinced? Guilty Gear 2: Overture. How do we make our original fans who support us happy? Well, how about we completely change the genre of the game, get rid of the beautiful sprites and have poorly rendered 3d models, say that it completely retcons any previously established story since Guilty Gear 1, and then build it in a weekend! At least SFIV will actually play as a 2d fighter.
So dude, if you’re going to threaten to jump to a different fighting game series (which I’m sure is really going to scare Capcom, losing that whole 1 sale and everything), at least get your facts straight.
And while I’m at it, on the the whole Capcom releasing DMC4 on the 360 and the PS3 thing…grow up already. Capcom releasing the game on the 360, as well as the ps3, in no way stopped elitist Sony fanboys from buying the game, and it didn’t affect the development of said game on the ps3. You have some stupid notion that just because you forked out money for a ps3, and that the DMC series has previously been released on a Sony console, that Capcom should choose to neglect a large chunk of their market and fans by pandering to your every childish whim. Nice try.
And while I’m digging the boot in, the fact that you believe that you somehow invested more into the gaming community by purchasing a more expensive console (I assume you’re a Sony fanboy, as you seem to believe that a technologically superior console equals a better console) is completely ridiculous. You need to grow up and learn that the world doesn’t revolve around you just because you spent money on something.
To Sven, thank you for attempting to explain to people why a cross platform beta isn’t feasible. While many obviously still refuse to see sense when the facts are right in front of them, many do appreciate you being open and honest about it. Good luck with the beta.
I don’t see what all the fuss is about, I would rather play the finished product nowing that it is 100% faultless and complete instead of playing a version that will only make me more eager (and anguished) about how the final product will be like. Also, maybe Capcom is actually listening to it’s fans; people actually wanted sf4 to be in 2D. And BTW Guilty Gear is ALSO a 2D game.
I understand the disappointment. As I said, we would have liked to have done both but it just wasn’t possible. The project is more than big enough already.
Thanks for understanding, that’s at least a little comforting. Still looking forward to the finished product, so hopefully the beta test is a wildly awesome success.
This is Wrong for Capcom, we PS3 owners deserve the beta, i started to belive that capcom doesnt have love for sony but is ok, maybe the picture of the Ken waiting to Dragon Punch the other Ken is right, i hope nobody buys the Commando 3 game, it suck anyways, the xbox live guys are going to buy it because they want SSFHD beta, i bet they are not even going to play that crap, the people that like Street Fighter dont like other kind of BS like Commando or whaterver its called, thats a no buy for me, how dare you capcom….how dare you.
It’s a great project. Really, this is the sort of thing fans idly wish for amongst their friends; a “wouldn’t it be cool if” type of idea that rarely sees fruition. It sounds like the project’s scope has grown beyond all expectations. Its development may be an unwieldy and tiresome process but the payoff seems pretty spectacular to me, especially after ingesting the latest and much appreciated barrage of SFHD info. The lessons learned will surely be a massive payoff for future projects with similar aspirations. I hope everyone can appreciate the amount of work that has gone into making this game.
I’m a PS3 user, and I’m glad there’s a beta coming out, even if only on XBL. The netcode is a pretty critical piece, and it only makes sense that given a limited budget (doesn’t every project have one?) that the beta would be released where it would be most effective, which for reasons stated by Capcom is on XBL; more testing and wider deployment. This benefits everyone in the long run. It has everything to do with logical decision making and nothing to do with favoritism. If they wanted to play favorites they’d release it (and a myriad of other games) as an exclusive.
I’m just saddened by the fact that the more I hear, the less it looks like STHD will get a PC release.
I don’t own any of the current gen consoles.
Come on, guys! You already have a contract with Valve/Steam!
Thing is, EVERY developer always launches the beta on the Xbox 360, while the PlayStation 3 never gets any of the love.
What I’m writing below will prove Capcom hates the PS3. If you have a response, go ahead and say it, prove me wrong.
That “gift” that you gave PS3 owners, which was Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, was for the loss of Monster Hunter 3, correct? Well, how come that gift was crap compared to the Xbox 360 version, in graphics and gameplay. And how come you release a PlayStation 3 version, only to release an even better exclusive Xbox 360 and PC version announced a month after the PS3 release? Wouldn’t it have made sense to develop them all for a simultaneous release meaning Colonies for the PlayStation 3 except this time don’t make it look and play like sh*t?
I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’m feeling pretty jipped. I bought the PS3 version and it was a terrible mistake. I had more fun playing the 360 demo at my friends house. What the hell Capcom? I’m not one who hates on companies at all, like those people calling you Crapcom, but this right here, is really, really, low. Oh, yeah, and you make the PS3 version cost $40 while this new version only costs $30.
No offense but this is total crap.
The half effort Lost Planet port that we PS3 users were supposed to be so thankful for is bug filled garbage.
You shaft PS3 users out of Monster Hunter 3, and now this?
I suppose PS3 users should be thankful that the game had to be changed to fit Microsoft’s file size limit so we already get a watered down product instead of what it could have been but now we will be expected to pay the same for Commando 3 with no beta as people will be paying for both?
Playstation users have always been good to Capcom, you have an online platform with no size limits and an entire world of opportunity yet you keep putting it on the back burner.
I gave up on your company long a go, when you showed middle finger to your fans by Canceling M. Hunters on PS3 and that whole fiasco with DMC4 even though the majority, if not all, your buyers were PlayStation owners. I boycotted your company last year, canceled all my orders from Amazon and will do my best do dissuade my friends from buying a single product from your company. Never forget, you were NOTHING without us and don’t ever bit the hand that feeds you. I hope your company bits the dust and bankrupts. I hate you, your company, your games and every single person who works there.
You don’t deserve the respect you got from us.
“Capcom doesn’t hate the PS3. Capcom loves money.” Not my quote, but it’s truth needed to be restated. Capcom is still my favorite developer, but this is not the same Capcom of yesterday. The Capcom that put out Viewtiful Joe on the GC and Tekki on the XBox. The Capcom that focused on making good games first before getting paid. I understand they gotta keep the doors open and the lights on, but things were a little better then.
Capcom has just “EA’d” the PS3.
Wow, I honestly cannot believe this. 360 owners are mainly compromised of FPS and sports fans with virtually no fanbase of fighting game fans…why do you think the 360 controller is so damn horrible for 2D fighters? No one in their right mind wants to use a 360 controller for a 2D fighter, especially a game like Street Fighter.
PS3 owners mainly thrive on Japanese offerings and that includes the fighting genre. Arc System Works has 2 games that are PS3 confirmed already and SNK will more than likely give us KoFXII amongst other offerings. Capcom has really sold out, always leaning towards the highest bidder or where they feel the most money will come in from. Their fanbase never meant anything to them ever since Resident Evil 4 was “exclusive” to the Gamecube but then realized that their sales didn’t live up to their expectations, which the PS2 accomplished for them.
I think it isnt because the Beta - it is because all the things that happened before it. First Monster Hunter 3 went to Wii - a brand that everyone associated with the name Playstation. After hordes of fan(boys) stormed the Capcom forums a Capcom Employee (Christian “Sven” Svensson) made a comment on the situation:
“Let’s see how they feel at the end of next week about us.”
A week later Capcom unveiled that Lost Planet is coming to the PS3.
You cant help, but the comment made by Sven now looked a “little” sarcastic.
Face it - “they” lost an exclusive Monster Hunter 3 for a port of an (by the time it launches) over a year old “good” (GR Avg Ratio 79%) Xbox 360- or an “average” (GR Avg Ratio 67.4%) Pc Game (depending on how you want to see it).
So Lost Planet launched a few weeks ago and is a really (sry to say it) poor port:
“There was an opportunity to make Lost Planet on the PS3 an incredible experience, fixing many of the bugs that plagued the 360 and PC versions and making this the version to get. Unfortunately, it comes across more like a bare boned port of an action title, with weak controls, bland and unimpressive visuals, and significant frame rate issues in both the single and multiplayer versions of the game. If you’re looking to play this game, you might be better served on one of the other systems than the PS3 version”
Ign
If that wasnt even enough, after the Ps3 Version launched, Capcom announced Lost Planet Colonies an extended Version of Lost Planet for XBox 360 and Pc that will launch in 2 months - looks like another punch in the face of Playstation 3 owners …
Beside all of this there a things like the inferior Ps3 Version of DMC4 (no real AA, only this Blur thing, 25 min. HD installation for like 1 sec. faster loading) or this Beta (thanks for the answers regarding this Beta btw.)
Note: I have no PS3, neither i own a 360, my only “next-gen” console is a wii, but i find it interesting how Capcom threatens Ps3 owners.
Scared to respond Capcom?
ALL PS3 OWNERS SHOULD BOYCOTT WOLF OF THE BATTLEFIELD: COMMANDO 3!!! That will give them something to whine about. They are worried about the extra money it would take to release it on the PS3, but they’ll have a lot more to worry about if we don’t buy WotB:C3.
Thanks for the lame excuse capcom. I bet microsoft struck a deal with them in order to get permission to break the size limit. ALL PS3 OWNERS SHOULD BOYCOTT WOLF OF THE BATTLEFIELD: COMMANDO 3!!!
I’m started to hate capcom as much I hate EA. They need to be equal as us. I’m a both owner so I’m not that hurt but the love you are giving to the ps3 is crap. If you want a bad PR then fine, but if you give love to the ps3 like EA are starting to do it you will sell more because the people are not angry with you. EA learned the lesson and it’s selling more now on the PS3, what about you? you are not that big as EA to lean in the hard way….
“We treat the PS3 extremely seriously.” It’s hard to believe you, Sven. Looks like you’re insulting the PS3 users, more looking at the SFHD picture of the post.
Please, don’t talk more about multiplatform. Or Monster Hunter 3, LP Colonies, Dead Rising, Zack & Wiki and Umbrella Chronicles are also planned for PS3? Are you waiting to release a crappy port for this console a month befor you announce a $10 cheaper sequel with more features in their original consoles?
And please, stop talking about global simultaneous digital downloads. Here in Europe we’re still waiting the first Capcom game in PSN. You didn’t relased ANYTHING.
And also please stop using the “multiple submissions” bullshit. The retail games work in this way in every single console, and DMC4 didn’t have this problem.
“6. When you show me someone running a cross platform beta… I’ll be impressed, because that’s a hell of an investment.”
Just see every PSN/XBLA demo of every game, you have tons of examples. Any of them uses the final code of the game. But they don’t call “beta” a demo. All of them are as “beta” as your SFHD demo. Or was your Lost Planet demo also a beta? Like the final game it has class A bugs (you’re also the first having this online bugs in PS3).
While it’s a slight shame that PSN isn’t getting the beta. But then again it’s only 8 weeks. I completely understand your reasoning though. I’m also sure the X360 owners will give you alot of good feedback about the game.
Reading the first reason though raises the question. How far away will the Europe/Australia be behind the US release?
Sure PSN is free for us users. But the developers are really having to bite the bullet instead to release there games/demos worldwide on the internet of all places.
It’s the biggest qualm I have with the way Sony go about their business.
Capcom just pissed off the PS3 community, and the Commando 3 game is going to pay for that. all the people that i know that own a ps3, at first they thought about buying Commando 3, but now that they know that the SFHD beta is not include din the PS3 version they said: To Hell with Commando, oh, Capcom and another thing, i hope that the PS3 version of Commando would be cheaper than the xbox360 version right? because we are not getting SFHD beta. xbox360 verson $10, PS3 version $5, or you can give it away for free, so the ps3 community stop been mad at you.
And another question why you released Lost planet for the 360, and then a year later release the same game for PS3 but like 10 times worse? i mean you guys had a year to fix every bug, make better graphics and a lot of stuff, but you didnt do anything,(please CAPCOM answer that question) it almost feels like you want to make M$ looks Better than Sony IMO.
and i think you guys made a deal with M$, they would let you use more than the 150mb limit, but the SFHD beta would be xbox live exclusive, that way they would get a lot of people that are waiting for SFHD to come out to decide which console to get, and now, guess what? they are going to buy an Xbox360 + a gold membership, why u ask? because the betta is Xbox live only.
Thanks again Capcom…. Thanks again.
The pic of Ken when u choose him at character select don’t look anything like the sprite of of Ken fighting in the game u should change that one has short hair and one has long hair
All of you need to stop whining. They explained why the beta is only on 360 and they’re good reasons. And not only that, but the 360 has a better and easier to use online service. It also has a larger community, which means they’ll be more people on 360 to test than there would be if they were only to release the beta on PS3. This only aids the game in the long run.
Yeah, the PS3 has been shafted some exclusive titles. The 360 ones were made early in it’s life and the PS3 came out a year after the 360. The Wii ones were made exclusively for Wii, because the Wii has features the PS3 doesn’t. And yeah, DMC4 went to 360 as well as PS3. So what? You still got the game. And you know how many more people own 360 than PS3? It’s a pretty damn large ammount. There’s a reason PS3’s lost so many exclusives.
I tried to think of a reason why PS3 bashing would be helpful here but I came up blank. Maybe you can help me out: what does bashing the PS3 and pissing off more people accomplish?
Woah! I actually had to stop reading those comments they became so stupid (Lost planet ps3 criticisms notwithstanding).
I bought DMC4 on 360 (75th best bloody palace in IRELAND!), yet you fools think I shouldn’t have been able too and the fact I could is an insult?.
Lets boil it down, the 360 has been locked down and out a lot longer than ps3, (only a year old in Europe) It is well known to be easier to work with because of this. Betas have been done on 360 before, they will be done on ps3 in time to come.
the 360 does have a market for fighters. Think about it.
SFIIHF best selling xbla title. DOA4 (with a decent Hori Stick) The proper version of (the glorious) VF5.
Better and unified online service.
Surely Games on both systems is the way forward…ps3 owners are still getting the same game on the same date.
Something I want to ask is this I wrote back on 07-12-05 regarding user profiles etc on xbox.
Sorry for the long quote but I am very interested if this (or another approach) is feasible, or even possible given the nature of the system.
“The thing I’m most worried about is the flow of multiplayer…real world multiplayer.
The problem is with the xbox, gamertag system, it takes so long to sign in and out and if we are going to have every stat tracked… we will wont to have no one but ourselves be responsible for our miserable loosing streaks…!
The solution in my eyes if possible would be before a session would take place, for all the gamertags that are going to be in use noted by the system in order…
lets say John ,Mary, Seán and Colm are going to play
John and Mary play first (a ken mirror match by the way…;-) ) Mary looses, on the character win pose screen an automatic 5 second countdown appears, if nothing is done Mary is signed out and Seán’s gamer tag is automatically loaded and the char select screen appears.
Seán now fights John, and wins, on the char win pose screen the countdown which would swap John for Colm appears…but Colm is in the toilet so by pressing x john can play again, or y will skip the next player and go on to in this case Mary…think of it like the halo 3 veto system, a few secs to vote and if nothing happens winner stays on continues as normal.
I’m Not sure if this is possible, but would love to hear your views on it.
I fear that on a game with short time in between switching players that constantly doing it manually would go from a small problem to a big one.”
Thanks. I look forward to playing you on live (and playing beating and muting some of the above commenters.)
I bought a PS3 for this game (didn’t want a lesser version on Xbox) (And of course for SF4). Looks like I’m going to have to borrow an xbox or something for the netcode beta…it’s just annoying — I understand the reasons.
P.S. Please unnerf one of RUY’s dragon punches.
