Set your Xbox/PS3 to “Wayback”: 1942 and Commando getting digital sequels, plus Beta news for SSFIIT HDR

March 12th, 2008 Chris "Kramez" Kramer

1942 on IGNLove World War II and hate planes? Enjoy shooting the living bejeebus out of everything and anything on the screen while driving a jeep? Have we got two digital titles for you!

IGN brings us early word of 1942, the forthcoming sequel to the infamous Capcom 194X series of arcade shoot-’em-ups (don’t you just hate the phrase shmup? makes my freakin’ skin crawl. shump. *brrr*) . Little planes, big bosses, lots of bullets and crazy vertical-scrolling action get the 3D treatment, along with 2 player internet (and same-console) co-op play.

Meanwhile, from Gamespot comes word that Commando 3 has done got itself a fancy-pantsy new name. You may now hail the forthcoming conqueror of both Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network Store as (drumroll): Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3. Live in fear of its mighty array of letters! Good thing we don’t have to pay per keystroke on the internet, or that game alone would break the Unity bank.

Oh, yeah, it also turns out that when you buy Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 on Xbox LIVE Arcade, you’ll automatically be eligible to take part in the network Beta test of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. Yoink! This will be the first Beta test for a LIVE Arcade game ever.

1942 and Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 are coming to Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network Store in the next few months. Both games will set you back 800 MS Points or $9.99, depending on your console of choice. SSFIIT HDR’s price is still TBD.

So, just to be clear: PS3 users will not be able to participate in the beta?

Sorry, PS3 owners, this is one of the few times that we’re not able to match a program on both systems. The Beta for SSFIIT HDR will only be on Xbox LIVE Arcade. This is a first for MS; they’ve done a few Betas in the past (Halo 3, CoD4) but this is the first time they’ve done a Beta for a digitally distributed LIVE Arcade title. My totally uninformed, shaking-the-Magic-8-ball guess is that Sony will be running Betas for big titles in a couple of months, just not in time for us to get Super Turbo’s Beta rolling on PSN.

I’m not entirely sure I understand your comment, Chris (beyond the general idea the beta will not be available on PS3).

Sony has already done public betas for big-name downloadables (in fact, I believe they’re doing one right now for Home), so this should be nothing new to them. If some other factor is preventing you from releasing the beta on PS3, though, I suppose there’s not much that can be done.

The character art is cool, but the other looked better imo, it also looked sharper, but you already explained that.
But why can’t the PS3 users get the beta test also? First we get an inferior version of Lost Planet, and much later, then an announcement that 360 and PC users get another expansion filled with content, and now this?

No love for the PS3 with that beta is really annoying. :(
